Kudos go once again to our officers, Jo Ann Gordon/Vice President, Dale Maglia/President, Agnes Traschetti/Secretary, and Joan Kaplan/Treasurer, for a great meeting, and for their tireless energy and attention to details that continue to make the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB the best it can be!

The MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT has seen much growth during the past 4 years, with JOHANNE SANTORI (and husband Adeo) directing the organization. She revealed a great strategy for the 2012 pageant at the meeting.

Delores Puzio, Director, NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASE, deserves a round of gratitude for arranging a steady schedule of performances throughout the State. She is affectionately known as our energizer bunny.

Desiree Nigrelli, MS NEWJERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011, has reached the mid-point of her reign. She has been very busy with her many commitments, and she has spread much cheer and good will throughout the Garden State with her lovely smile and voice.

The first meeting of the year of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB is always the best, and Wednesday, January 18th was no different. The pot luck luncheon was a delicious array of favorite recipes that the ladies prepared especially for the occasion.

The meeting that followed was full of good news from all the standing committees. Their reports reflected how hard everyone had worked in 2011, to make both the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB and the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT successful. Each committee chairwoman concluded her report with expressions of hope and high expectations for the new year.

It was good to welcome back the ladies who were out for several months due to illness. Some had traveled a long road towards recovery. They looked great, well rested, and willing to take on new responsibilities. Everyone in attendance seemed energized, and eager to set the many plans and projects in motion to make the 41st year of both organizations the best ever.

The meeting adjourned early in order to give time for the first rehearsal of the GREAT DAMES CHORUS. Although it was a short rehearsal, the ladies took to the music like fish to water! They were eager to get started, and the first rehearsal was full of great promise. It was obvious that they had practiced the music on their own, because they followed Director Josephine Araniti easily. Broadway Ladies, a medley of 3 great songs, is a real crowd pleaser and show stopper, and Wednseday was a great first rehearsal for the fledgling group. The GREAT DAMES CHORUS is scheduled to make their debut performance at the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2012.

Hello, and Greetings from the Great State of NEW JERSEY, the fabulous ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization!

We are reaching out to expand our readership to include our "sisters" nationwide through their State Pageant Directors. We hope that you will read our blog and website from time to time and catch up with all our latest news. Our blog is now in its 3rd year, and there have been many articles of interest published. "Fast away the Old Year passes ... welcome in the New, lads and lasses!" So true are the words of the familiar carol, Deck the Halls. The year 2011 was good for the elegant ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. Our ladies gave many showcases throughout the State, thanks to the efforts of our Showcase Director, Delores Puzio. The current board of officers, brought much needed clarity, leadership and transparency to the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and created a positive climate to allow its members to express their views and criticisms freely. The annual Holiday Celebration was such fun, thanks to the efforts of Sherri McGhie and her committee. Our official website, www.msnewjerseysenioramerica.org. made its debut last spring, thanks to the hard work of our President, Dale Maglia, and photos by Sherri McGhie. Special thanks to Jo Ann Gordon, Vice President, for designing the 2011 Calendar, the beautiful jewelry and name tags, and to Johanne Santori, for our new jackets with the MSNJSA logo.

The MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011, received Statewide coverage in the STAR LEDGER, and a feature video on their website, and The Press of Atlantic City also continued its coverage. The Pageant was seen nationally on TV this year, when it was featured on the STYLE Channel, on the show, "JERSEYLICIOUS". Kudos to MSNJSA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR, Johanne Santori, for reaching out and getting us this much need exposure! A newly formed group, THE GREAT DAMES CHORUS, under the directorship of Josephine Araniti, MSNJSA 2007, is scheduled to make its debut at the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2012.

On the other hand, there was, sadness for us this year, because we had to say "adieu" to many of our "sisters." The long time members who moved away to other States ... to you, we wish you good luck in your new homes. To those who are ill, we hope that you have a speedy recovery and return to us. To those who passed away ... to you, we say, rest in peace, and may perpetual light shine upon you. To those who have kept away, for other reasons ... please come back, we need you, your talent, your strength, and the joy you bring to this organization.

NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB'S FRIENDLY ENCOUNTER WITH THE LAW

Cameras were clicking and flashing from several parts of the room .... It's no wonder .... these elegant ladies not only looked beautiful, but each one was at her peak performance level yesterday. Most people view run-ins with the law with trepidation, but, for a group of ladies from the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, yesterday's encounter turned out to be quite a pleasant affair. They were invited by the POLICE DEPARTMENT, CITY OF NEW YORK, JERSEY SHORE 10-13 ASSOCIATION, to perform at their 26TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY. The event was held at DOOLAN'S SHORE CLUB in Spring Lake Heights.

Upon arrival, the ladies were treated to drinks, by the Association's President, Al Beneducci, and then to a sumptuous sit-down dinner. Afterwords, they gave a show for 250 patrolmen, detectives and their spouses, and guests. All the ladies gave stellar performances, and the audience showed their appreciation and gratitude with enthusiastic applause for each lady's performance.

The spirit of the holiday season was high yesterday, and all of the fabulous ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB hope that it will continue during the coming year. So, here's wishing all of you who read this blog a MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR! And, last but not least, as the comedian Jerry Seinfeld once coined the phrase, "HAPPY FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!"

The stars shone brightly last night, to welcome the elegant ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB and other invited guests, as they gathered together for the 13th ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION, at La Bove Grande Restaurant in Lakehurst. It was a delightful evening, filled with fun, laughter, good cheer, and great music, and a delicious buffet dinner, complete with a mimosa fountain that flowed all night long. NJCC MEMBERS ... MAKE A DREAM COME TRUE

Kudos to our directors for their foresight and vision, and for making the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT the best in the county!

"SOMETHING'S COMIN' ... SOMETHING GOOD! ... AROUND THE CORNER ..."

A long held dream of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTORS, Adeo and Johanne Santori has been realized, the inclusion of a chorus as part of the entertainment during the pageants. Johanne enlisted the help of Josephine Araniti, MSNJSA2007, appointed her as director, and told her to come up with a plan. After a week of e-mails and phone calls, the idea was enthusiastically received by many NJCC members.

The group is called, THE GREAT DAMES CHORUS, has 38 members and is still growing, the majority of whom are singers, and the rest are dancers, mimes, and specialty acts. Their debut performance will be at the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2012, in June, the exact date yet to be announced.

THE GREAT DAMES CHORUS will do a number called "BROADWAY LADIES", a medley of 3 all-time hits songs, We're In The Money, Big Spender, and Whatever Lola Wants". The format is Show Chorus, a style of performing that has been made popular by the hit TV series, "GLEE". Instead of the traditional row-like formation, the ladies will stand in clusters, with the singers singing and moving in place, while the dancers and others do a choreographed routine.

Special thanks go to Joan Kaplan, NJCC Treasurer, who arranged the rehearsal space, which is the American Legion Post #166, in Lakewood. Much luck to everyone on this new venture!

ELECTION RESULTS OF NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB OFFICERS

The members of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB held their quarterly luncheon/meeting on Wednesday, October 25th, at the American Legion Post #166 in Lakewood. The agenda was full of items of interest to the membership. Some of the highlights of their meeting include: the introduction of the new Queen, Desiree Nigrelli, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011. She talked briefly about her experience at the MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011, her written proclamations she received from local and State agencies, her philosophy of life and her vision about what she hopes to accomplish during this year of her reign.

Another issue of concern was the growing number of ladies who were unable to attend the meeting due to serious and/or life threatening illnesses, many of whom have been so vital to the growth of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB and the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization. It was decided that the membership should keep in continued touch with them, not only by sending cards, but with phone calls as well.

The last item on the day's agenda was the election of officers, a process which occurs every two years. As there were no opposing candidates seeking to run for any of the 4 positions, the current slate of officers, won easy re-election by a unanimous vote which was cast by the members who were in attendance.

The four officers who will serve another 2 year term are:

DALE MAGLIA, President. "I came in 3rd runner up in the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2006. I have 3 married children, Maria, Theresa, and Garrod, and 5 grandchildren, Breanne, Gabriel, Natalie, Nicole and Zakary. I worked most of my life up until
2 1/2 years ago, as an Administrative Assistant. I have been a member of Sweet Adelines, Inc., a womens' barbershop group, for 45 years. My quartet, "Ricochet", has sung at many shows, organizations, competitions, etc. I also love to country line dance once or twice a week, and, most of all, I enjoy being with my family and friends.
There is so much talent among our NJCC members, and so, as we go forward, working together as a team, I believe that there is no limit as to how far we can go to further the goals of our Club. On behalf of myself and our Board of Directors, we look forward to continue to work with Johanne Santori, our MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA State Pageant Director, to make the NJCC and the MSNJSA State Pageant, the best in the country".

JO ANN GORDON, Vice-President, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2008, a retired public school teacher of 38 years, taught in the Neptune Township School System, where she learned Sign Language, in order to participate in the hearing impairment and special education programs.
A big band singer, Jo Ann has sung backup for Paul Anka, toured Europe, and has recorded CDs.
After winning reelection, Jo Ann joked with her sisters that the only reason she won was because everyone loves her homemade brownies! Although that is true, it is the flair she possesses as an entrepreneur that really makes her stand out. Her suggestions to the other Board members have led to several improvements to the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB during her first 2 year term. There was a need to upgrade the sound system, so, she enlisted the help of Johanne Santori, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR. Johanne agreed to fund the project from the Pageant account, thus enabling Jo Ann to purchase an excellent state of the art sound system. She taught other CLUB members how to operate the system at NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB shows when she is not able to attend. Jo Ann had a personalized 2010 NJCC calendar printed which included beautiful color group photos of our members as the theme for each month. She worked with a local jewelry designer who created a special magnetized name pin with the NJCC logo, and beautiful costume jewelry of crown pins, and cameo rings.

AGNES TRASCHETTI, Secretary, grew up in Newark, NJ, and now resides in Toms River with her husband, Dominick. Agnes was runner up in the 2004 Pageant. She has 2 children, 1 grandson, 4 step grand-kids, and 1 great-granddaughter. Her hobbies include: playing the piano, singing, gourmet cooking, dining out, entertaining with the NJCC, mah-jong, poker, and dancing. Agnes is also Secretary of the Holiday City/Silver Ridge Italian-American Club for the past 7 years. Her philosophy of life is, "I believe that life is a smorgasbord, and we can keep tasting till our life no longer exists. Tasting life is part of living, whether the taste is sweet or bitter".
I feel we have a great thing going in our "Sisterhood" of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and we can only be strong, if we pull together as one".

JOAN KAPLAN, Secretary, has 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She gives words of wisdom to them from time to time, and these same words she would pass on to the younger generation as well, which is, "think before you do anything, and always turn to God when you're in trouble".
Joanie is loved by her "sisters", for her jovial nature, and her great alto voice, that she uses so well when she performs the old songs.
She served as Councilwomen from Lakehurst, NJ during the years 1984-87.
Joan has devoted her life as volunteer for many organizations and civic groups. She serves as Head of Ushers at All Saints Episcopal Church. As a volunteer at Kimball Medical Center (12 years), Joan used to sing to the patients during her daily rounds; mediator for Small Claims and Superior Court, Toms River, and for Manchester Township Civil Court. She is Chaplain for the American Legion Auxiliary Post #166, Lakewood, for 42 years.
Her philosophy of life is: "be kind, passionate and try not be judgmental. Remember, God never gives you more than you can handle".
Joan's vision for the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB is she hopes, that as our club grows, we will add more performances for our veterans.

Congratulations to all 4 ladies on your re-election, on whose leadership this Club has been entrusted. We (members) witnessed a healthy growth in the last 2 years, and we are confident that the next 2 will be more of the same.

The first time filing onstage, we announced our name and State ... I was #2.

These next 2 photos are from The Opening Number which was a dance. We performed the same routine at the 2 Preliminaries and for the Final Pageant.

The PERSONAL INTERVIEW with the judges was held on the first day. The session lasted 5 minutes and I believe it went well. The judges made some favorable comments to me before I left.

These 2 photos were from the TALENT PRESENTATION, one from the preliminary and one at the finals, in which I wore different gowns. I sang "Crazy", and the audience gave me a warm applause for my performance.

After 2 days of Preliminaries, the day of the Final Pageant arrived, and my name had just been called for making the TOP TEN of the entire country! Here I am beaming with pride, holding onto my plaque.

With Suzanne Shelley, MS SENIOR AMERICA 2006. Suzanne was very supportive of me the whole week, and we will be visiting each other this year.

The crown I won, was the crowd approval and the confirmation of the other contestants who believed I would walk away with the Crown.

It means so much more when your peers have chosen you. They have continued their support of me by forwarding many gifts with crowns or some regal adornment. I am blessed to have such recognition.

God has always made me a winner. The pageant was worth gaining such notoriety from so many talented and educated women.

One new friend and her family sent this to me: "A truly beautiful person is like a stained glass window, it sparkles and shines with so many facets when the sun is out; then when darkness comes its true beauty is revealed only from the light within."

I am awed at my VICTORY!

DESIREE NIGRELLI, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011

The MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011 is now history. The event was held during the week of October 2nd to 6th, at Harrah's Resort and Casino, in the Concert Venue Theater.

After two grueling days of preliminaries, a discerning panel of judges voted Desiree Nigrelli, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011, into the Top Ten. The Top Ten is the "inner circle", that includes the best "ladies of elegance" nationwide, who get one more chance to compete in the final competition. Preceded only by the actual Queen and her Court (which consists of the 4 runners up), the Top Ten is a most enviable place to be.

As the delegate from New Jersey, Desiree looked beautiful and stylish, elegant, and charming, and her grace generated audience appeal. She performed effortlessly in the 3 catagories that were seen by the audience, that include: Philosophy of Life; Evening Gown; and Talent. The 4th, was the Private Interview with the panel of judges.

With the pageant behind her, Desiree now returns to her busy schedule of appearances and performances throughout the Garden State. Kudos to a wonderful woman on a job well done!

Soon after winning the title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011, Desiree was a guest on the Pinky Kravitz radio show. She is chaperoned by MSNJSA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR, Johanne Santori.

The NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB gave a show at Kennedy Mall on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in August. Desiree delivered a great performance that evening.

At a recent show, Desiree removed her crown and banner to honor wounded Veteran's and to observe the 10th Anniversary of the World Trade Center Bombing. She sang, "Proud To be An American".

NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB ... 2011 SUMMER WRAP UP

The summer of 2011 was as hot as it was busy for the ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. To paraphrase the motto from the US Postal Service, neither the excessive heat and humidity, nor the abundance of rainfall and other natural disasters, deterred our elegant ladies from "performing their expected rounds". The following is a recap of some of their summer activities.

The ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB worked together with the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization, and helped State Director Johanne Santori to make the 2011 pageant a success. At the July meeting, they prepared a special luncheon and bought a cake to honor the new queen, Desiree Nigrelli.

There were many NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASES during the 3 month period, and our great ladies gave dazzling performances for a variety of age-related audiences. The shows gave people the chance to meet and hear the current Queen, and to wish her well as she prepares for the National Pageant. The songs of Desiree Nigrelli, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011, have brought much joy, and her encouraging words have given hope to our audiences.

The highlight of the summer, was the outdoor show at the Kennedy Mall on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in August. Ominous weather was in the forecast for the Sunday evening performance, but the rain held out just long enough for the show to go on. The show was in a variety format, and included songs, dances and humor that was enjoyed by a family oriented audience. Kudos go to Delores Puzio, NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASE DIRECTOR, for arranging such an ambitious summer schedule.

The long awaited website was finally launched, www.msnewjerseysenioramerica.org, thanks to Dale Maglia, president of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. Although there are no photos in this article, the website includes many from the summer.

The one event that disappointed everyone and ignited a firestorm of angry opinion, was the airing of portions of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011, as seen through the eyes of the writers of the show, JERSEYLICIOUS, on the Style Network. Although the show reached a national viewing audience, it did nothing to capture the essence of the pageant, since its writers portrayed women in the "age of elegance" in an unfavorable and untrue fashion.

For the most part, last summer was a good time for the ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. They have done their best to make a difference, in the lives of the people they touched. Their record of achievements far outweigh any occasional disappointment, and only makes them work harder to dispel injustices that have befallen them and to people in their age group. They look forward with enthusiasm to the coming year, and welcome whatever challenges that might lay ahead.

NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB MEMBERS --- THESE LADIES ARE NOT JUST SKIN DEEP!

The gracious women who make up the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB lead busy and productive lives in their own communities, and, each in her own way, exemplifies the philosophy of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT: which is, "to promote the positive aspects of aging". At the July meeting, they participated in an informal survey to discover what life is like once they had reached the "age of elegance", or, 60 years and over. The results are in, and can be summed up in the following categories: (1) have fun; (2) strive to touch someone every day; (3) continue to make your voice heard. Forty women participated, and although it is not possible to mention each one by name, the survey did show that most of the ladies are involved in these 3 aforementioned categories.

HAVING FUN!
This can be anything from: doing puzzles, reading, writing poetry, traveling, equestrian riding, going to sports events; keeping fit by playing golf, running, water aerobics, kayaking, karate, and belonging to health clubs; flower arranging, arts and crafts, cooking and giving dinner parties, sewing, modeling, gardening; belonging to other clubs/groups IE: musical, theatrical, opera chorus, dance, church choir or cantor; playing the piano, learning another language; teaching hula and tap dancing; tutoring children, and teaching animal therapy.
Some ladies write, produce, and direct shows in their communities, others sing in small groups, and some perform one-woman shows of her own, or sing with dance bands.

STRIVE TO TOUCH SOMEONE EVERYDAY!
Grand parenting, taking care of a beloved spouse, and taking care of home bound neighbors, is the top priority in this category, while other ladies do volunteer work at local hospitals, schools, day care centers, the American Cancer Society, veterans' homes and the public library. Some are active in their church, IE: head ushers, Eucharistic ministers, Pastor Emeritus. Lastly, some help out at the local humane society, and others adopt and take care of animals in their homes.

CONTINUE TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!
Some ladies still work full time at their own businesses, while others work full or part time in the public and private sectors. Lastly, our ladies serve of boards of local philanthropic and artistic groups, and others take an active interest by speaking out and writing on matters of concern involving their Town, State and Nation.

No, our wonderful ladies do not sit in rocking chairs pining and letting the world pass them by. They use it, rather, to gently rock an ailing baby, or to calm a young child who is afraid of the storm. They appear at county fairs, not as little grannies, selling apple pies or jars of pickles, but as smartly dressed entrepreneurs of their newly formed companies, passing out samples and business cards to passersby. They are out there making a difference, raising an awareness that seniors are the foundation of America, upon which the younger generations can build a better society.

STYLE NETWORK'S REALITY TV SHOW FEATURED MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011

Members of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization have been eagerly awaiting coverage of the 2011 pageant on the Style Network. Last night it aired on the popular reality show, "JERSEYLICIOUS".

Since true reality is not that interesting, the producers of the show created a story line, a rivalry between 2 beauty consultants, Tracy and Olivia. Tracy's grandmother, Catherine Schroeder, had entered the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011, and Tracy was determined to help her out to be the best that she could be. She presented the idea of doing hair and makeup for all 13 contestants to Gayle, the owner of the Gatsby beauty salon. Her idea was accepted and a crew of hair and makeup specialists were assigned to the pageant.

Now, fast forward to June 2nd, the day of the pageant, and the scene is the contestants' dressing room at Harrah's in Atlantic City. After the crew meets the ladies, Olivia becomes partial to one contestant, Patricia Genovese, and offers her advice and options for 4 different "looks". Tracy overhears their conversation, and takes Olivia aside; accusations abound, resulting into a full blown cat fight with no holds barred. Patricia and Catherine were great in their roles: Patricia played a very agressive and competitive contestant who wanted to win no matter what the cost; and Catherine was calm, complacent, and just wanted everyone to get along.

The writers for "JERSEYLICIOUS" followed the standard formula as far as reality shows go: there were 3 other storylines that filled out the hour, with coverage of the pageant lasting about 12 minutes in all. The segment reached the expected conclusion with the crowning of the new Queen Desiree Nigrelli, with Tracy and Olivia expressing their disapointment that neither of their 2 faves had won.

The one major criticism of the show was the confusion over where the pageant actually was held. There were scenes showing the boardwalk, and the outside of Convention Hall, thus implying that the pageant was held there. Just to set the record straight, all who attended the pageant know that it was held at Harrah's. The MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT enjoys an ongoing relationship with Harrah's, and this year is the organization's 4th year with the hotel/casino, since leaving the Taj Mahal.

Cudos to the crew of makeup artists and hairstylists from "JERSEYLICIOUS" for doing a fantastic job of making each contestant look so beautiful. However, the show's writers did not do a good job of capturing the essence of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization, nor did they give the women who have entered into the "age of elegance" the respect they so richly deserve.

The NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB held its quarterly meeting at the America Legion Post 166, in Lakewood, yesterday. The July meeting is always a special time, because the members get to meet and greet their new queen and the CLASS of 2011. Members were treated to a tasty luncheon buffet of fried chicken, several salads, Jo Ann Gordon's (MSNJSA 2008) famous vanilla brownies, and a huge sheet cake, with the words, WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 2011 on it.

Unfortunately, Desiree Nigrelli, MS NJSA 2011 was unable to attend, due to the unexpected passing of a family friend, and the funeral was at the same time. It seemed that yesterday turned out to be a surreal day for Desiree ..... a day that started out with sadness, then, later on, turned into a happy time. She was invited by Mayor Langford and the members of the Atlantic City Town Council to appear at City Hall at 5:00 pm, to receive a Proclamation of Achievement, for winning the title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011. Congratulations!

Meanwhile, back at the meeting .... after lunch, the new members were introduced, given a photo CD from the pageant, and an article from The Current newspaper, as mementos of their participation in the pageant. NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB President, Dale Maglia went on to conduct the meeting, and many items were discussed.

One item, of special interest, was the long awaited installation of our new website. She announced to everyone that it is up and running. There are several departments of interest, and lots of photos, past and present. Dale says our website will continue to evolve and grow over time, but for the present, is is something the members can be proud of and tell their friends and family to check out. ANOTHER CONTEST - AND WINNER(S) FROM MSNJSA PAGEANT

Rebecca Orsatti, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010, won 1st place prize. She impressed the judges in many ways. One in particular, was the rhythmic complexity of her song, "Don't Rain On My Parade". They praised her for her looks, and showmanship, noting from Rebecca's biography, that she was truly born to sing. Sherri McGhie, won 2nd place prize. She aroused the judges and audience with her salty rendition of the country favorite, "Harper Valley PTA". She told the naughty tale with witt and humor, and possessed a rich earthy vocal tone which was noted by the judges.

Sunday June 26th, was a proud day for the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization, when, 4 fabulous former Queens plus our very own Sherri McGhie, took center stage. Generous words of praise abounded from the lips of the 3 judges. Each elegant lady gave powerful, distinctive, and impressive performances, making it impossible for them to find anything to be critical about.

Josephine Araniti, MSNJSA 2007, sang "Where Or When". Dressed in a sexy red dress, she set out to give the great performance that her NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB sisters, have grown to admire and respect. Two of the judges remembered her from a previous contest at the Algonquin Theater, that she participated in last year, and rekindled that memory when they commented on her performance.

Johanne Santori, MSNJSA 2006, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR, sang "C'est Si Bonne", with style, glamour and grace. The judges commented on her elegant performance, and noted that her rendition had just the right amount of sexy sophistication.

JoAnn Gordon, MSNJSA 2008, and Vice-President of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, was the last to perform among the group of 18 finalists. Her song, "Orange Colored Sky", was a happy and positive way to end the Shore Senior Idol Contest. The judges took note of the fact that she sang with so much joy and confidence, and had the audience tapping their feet to her lively song.

The program was held together by lovely Bernadette Dudek, MSNJSA 2009, and 2009 winner of Senior Idol. As Emcee, she kept the program running smoothly, giving clear and interesting commentary on the different aspects of the contest. At the opening of act 2, she sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone", to which she received a heart warming applause.

The 3rd place prize went to George Aline, who sang an Al Jolson classic, "Rock a Bye Your Baby".

We can be proud of our ladies .... they are out there having fun, and giving inspiration to all they touch. As one of the contestants, I can only say, how happy I was to be a finalist in the Shore Senior Idol Contest, and to be among a group of 18 dynamic seniors who gave their best in what turned out to be great family show!

SHORE SENIOR IDOL CONTEST

4 MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA QUEENS + SHERRI MCGHIE PARTICIPATE IN 3RD ANNUAL SHORE SENIOR IDOL CONTEST

Now that pageant fever has calmed down, another exciting event is soon approaching, the 3rd Annual Shore Senior Idol Contest. Four MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA QUEENS + SHERRI MCGHIE made the finals, and will join with 13 other contestants, at the Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan, on Sunday, June 26th at 3:00 pm.

Besides Sherri McGhie, the Queens are: Johanne Santori, MSNJSA 2006, and MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR; Josephine Araniti, MSNJSA 2007; JoAnn Gordon, MSNJSA 2008; and Rebecca Orsatti, MSNJSA 2010.

The contestants met at the Algonquin Theater for the first time on Thursday, June 16th. Director Gina Lupi, gave a brief welcome and orientation speech, and rehearsed the opening number with the group. Afterwards, everyone got the chance to go over their solos with the sound crew.

There was a feeling of excitement and anticipation in auditorium that day. Everyone has their "eye on the prize(s)". Who will win, place or show?" That's a secret that only the 3 judges know!

The contestants, with talent "on loan from God", pledge to perform their very best. In particular, our 4 Queens + Sherri McGhie, possess extraordinary vocal prowess that their NEW JERSY CAMEO CLUB sisters know and love.

This year's 3rd Shore Senior Idol Contest will be hosted by another Queen, Bernadette Dudek, MSNJSA 2009. There will be a special performance by the Shore Repertory Theatre Company's production of NUNSENSE!

HERE SHE IS ... MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011!

"The results are in and the winner is"..... This is the traditional phrase that ends most beauty pageants, and yesterday's MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011 was no different. After a 3 hour long battle for the crown, Desiree Nigrelli, a resident of Atlantic City, emerged triumphant as this year's Queen. She convinced a panel of judges and a discerning audience that she is "the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity and inner beauty of all senior Americans."

This beauty is more than just "skin deep," as is revealed in the following Q & A interview with Desiree, earlier today.

JA: How did you hear about the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT?

DN: My daughter did some searching on the internet and found the national website. She
called the office and was given the name, etc. of Johanne Santori, MSNJSA State Pageant
Director, to contact.

JA: Why did your daughter do this for you?

DN: I shared my life in show business with my daughter, so she knows of my background.
I haven't sung or performed in 20 years, and so she wanted me to revive my talent, and
to get involved in performing again in some way. So, when she learned about the
MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization, she urged me to enter.

JA: That's interesting. Would you like to share with me your background?

DN: Sure. I am a classically trained ballet dancer, and I performed as prima ballerina and eventually taught ballet. Besides singing, I also play piano and guitar. In Atlantic City's heyday,
I sang in shows at the famous Steele Pier, and I have memories of singing in shows with
great stars like Tony Bennett and comedian, Red Buttons.

JA: Do you have any other special memories when you performed at the Steele Pier?

DN: Yes I do! At the tender age of 15, I was a performer in the famous show, "Stars of Tomorrow". The owner of the Steele Pier approached Tony Grant, the show's host, and requested me as a replacement for Jimmy Rogers, who was to perform in the main theater. He was unable to perform that evening, due to a family emergency, and the owner felt that I possessed the stage presence and talent to replace him.

JA: What other hobbies or talents do you have?

DN: I am trained in the discipline of dressage .... an equestrian sport, where you dress up in a tuxedo jacket, white pants, black hat, and tall riding boots. I've won several ribbons and trophies. Also, my husband Martin and I had a horse ranch built for us in Pittsgrove, New Jersey, where we raised champion horses.

JA: Besides your life in show business, did you have another occupation?

DN: Yes. I was a model, Director of Public Relations for the John Robert Powers Modeling Agency, and served as CEO of a real estate investment company in New Jersey.

JA: How has life been for you since retirement?

DN: It's been exciting and fulfilling. Martin and I bought a beautiful, but old house in Atlantic
City, and we are restoring it, hopefully to its former glory. Also, I am in the process of writing 2 books: the first one is, "Hoofprints On My Heart," which is about my love of horses; and the second one is, "Between the Lines." The title doesn't really tell what the book is about, so let me subtitle it for you: "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart." Does that help a little? No? Well it's about life in Atlantic City, back in the day!

JA: OH! I'm glad you explained the latter book, because I didn't get it until the end! Did you enjoy yourself yesterday? Did the pageant meet your expectations? Please share your feelings.

DN: It was exciting and memorable. Everyone backstage connected with MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT was helpful and kept us moving. It was an exhilarating experience for me, filled with pleasant memories that will last me for a long time to come. Martin, my husband of 45 years, is my staunchest fan, and he is so proud of my winning the title, as well as my daughter and 2 grandchildren.

JA: I forgot to ask you, you entered the pageant as a singer. What song did you sing?

DN: I sang that classic favorite, "CRAZY."

JA: I know that it is very hard to recite one's Philosophy of Life in 35 seconds, and say how
you really feel. Well, now's the time you may expand it a bit, or express your thoughts, if you wish.

DN: That's true. It was very hard to express my feelings in 35 seconds. Thanks, I would
love to. I think that whatever defines you controls you. With me it is my faith in God
that keeps me morally and compassionately motivated. Also, we sometimes rely entirely on the "now generation". We must remember the best informed person is not necessarily the wisest. Indeed there is a danger that preciously in the multiplicity of their knowledge they will lose sight of what is essential which you learn through age. I am hoping to promote my platform through my title as MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011, and project hope and confidence, and keep alive the interest in the growing population of senior Americans.

JA: Those are quite profound thoughts, and you expressed them most eloquently. You will
have a very busy year ahead as our new Queen, and also to prepare yourself for the national
pageant this coming in October. I believe that you will do an excellent job in promoting the
positive aspects of aging. Good Luck!

MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011 ... 40TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Atlantic City will once again become alive with excitement in anticipation of the 40th Anniversary Special Presentation of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. Thirteen elegant ladies, 60 years and older, who come from different parts of the Garden State, will grace the stage at Harrah's to compete for the coveted title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2011.

Harrah's Resort Hotel and Casino will again host the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2011. The event will be held on Thursday, June 2nd, in the Concert Venue Theater at 1:00 pm.

Contestants are judged in four catagories: Interview, Philosophy of Life, Evening Gown, and Talent. Upon winning the State title, the Queen becomes the delegate from New Jersey and will compete in the national pageant which will also be held at Harrah's in October.

The pageant will also include a variety of other entertaining performances, and climaxes with outgoing Queen Rebecca Orsatti, who will deliver her farewell address, sing, and crown this year's winner. The pageant is rated general and can be enjoyed by the entire family.

An orientation-luncheon was held for the ladies who comprise the CLASS OF 2011, at which time the contestants got acquainted with each other, and learned how to prepare for the upcoming pageant. Officers and members of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, hosted the luncheon, and Lyn Gibson, MSNJSA 2000, resident of Leisuretown, Southhampton, arranged for the meeting to be held in Laurel Hall.

After lunch, Johanne Santori, MSNJSA PAGEANT State Director, began the preliminary rehearsal for the pageant. The ladies were bright and seemed eager to work hard, as they paraded briskly across the stage, trying to follow the myriad of directions. Johanne made the afternoon rehearsal pleasant, preparing the ladies well for the next time they will meet, .... at the pageant, and, on the big stage at Harrah's!

The Talent Presentation of the Pageant is usually the most entertaining for the audience, and this year's class offers a variety of performances. Here is the lineup of each lady's talent.

Here, the ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB are joined by John McLaughlin, president of the McLaughlin Financial Group.

Since winning the title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010, Rebecca Orsatti and the ladies of the 2010 Queen's Court have been quite busy. Rebecca has made many appearances statewide on TV, radio, and in newspapers and magazines, and has done a wonderful job to promote the positive aspects of aging.

She and the 2010 Queen's Court are the first choice as performers in the New Jersey Cameo Club Showcases. They, along with the other ladies of the "sisterhood" spread joy and happiness wherever they perform.

John McLaughlin, president of the firm, The McLaughlin Financial Group, gives an annual Christmas party for his clients, as a token of gratitude for their business. The event was held at LA BOVE GRANDE RESTAURANT in Lakehurst on Thursday, December 16th. The ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB provided the entertainment for the affair. Afterwards, they sat down to partake in the sumptuous dinner that followed.

Rebecca will have more to do in the year ahead as the official ambassador for the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. As 2010 comes to a close, she gets many cudos from her sisters, the "elegant ladies" of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and the gratitude from the many people whose lives she has touched thus far.

Congratulations to Rebecca for making the winner's circle, a tremendous achievement, indeed! As MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010, Rebecca will resume her busy schedule of appearances throughout the State, spreading smiles and joy to those in need.

Rebecca Orsatti, was an honored guest at a Republican fundraiser in Linwood. In the photo, Governor Chris Christie, and Freeholder Frank Formica, acknowledge Rebecca for winning the title of MSNJSA 2010.

Pageant fever has reached its peak these days, as beauty aficionados eagerly await the MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2010, an annual pageant for women 60 and over, which will be held during the week of October 3rd through 6th, at Harrah's in Atlantic City. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Senior America, Inc., and organization officials are planning several events to celebrate the occasion during pageant week.

MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010, REBECCA ORSATTI, too, is exhilarated and excited, and has spent the past summer preparing for the upcoming national pageant. As the familiar quote says: "it takes a village to make a child", so has it taken people to help "Becky", as she is fondly known. MSNJSA PAGEANT DIRECTOR, Johanne Santori, has arranged appearances for Queen Rebecca at parades, fundraisers, Atlantic City events, radio and TV, newspaper interviews, and speaking engagements. She and the QUEEN'S COURT have been in several parades statewide. Delores Puzio, Director of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASES, which is the service wing of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT, has booked shows to highlight the current queen, and Rebecca performs alongside her "sisters"throughout the Garden State. These gorgeous and talented ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB have nurtured and supported Rebecca, since she won the state title.

Rebecca is using her crown and title to "make a difference", and so far, she has found 2 worthy causes to promote: an appearance for the Rotary Club and Just 4 KIDS FOUNDATION, and as judge for the MISS CAPE MAY BEAUTY PAGEANT 2010. She plans to seek out more opportunities to be of service during this year of her reign.

She has received many acknowledgments and citations, for her achievements thus far. The list includes: 1. The Atlantic City Council Members; 2. Mayor of Atlantic City, Lorenzo Langford. 3. The Atlantic County Freeholders Board - presentation by Freeholder Frank Formica. 4. The Atlantic County Executive - Dennis Levenson. 5. State Senator James Whelan. 6. The Assemblymen of Atlantic County - John Amadeo and Vince Polistina. 7. The Governor of New Jersey - Chris Christie.

Whether it be friend, family, Cameo sisters, or politician, everyone knows "Becky" and admires her charm, wit, beauty and gorgeous singing voice. She has captured our hearts with her sweet smile and uplifting spirit, and she is an excellent role model for people in the 60+ generation. She has already ignited people's hearts in New Jersey, and we believe that the national title of MS SENIOR AMERICA 2010 is well within her grasp. We send our love and wish her much luck!

A BUSY SUMMER FOR THIS PAST MSNJSA QUEEN

By now most of you who read our blog, know that I, Josephine Araniti, am the writer. It has been my pleasure to write about the New Jersey Senior America Pageant, its Queens, the Senior America National Pageant, and the "elegant ladies" of the New Jersey Cameo Club. The intent of this blog is to write about these truly inspirational women, as they journey through life after age 60.

I have been a member of the New Jersey Cameo Club for 3 years, after I won the title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2007. Until now, I haven't written about myself, but I did have a busy summer, and I would like to share some of those times with you.

Wall Township held a Memorial Day Celebration on the Town Green, and I sang in the chorus to commemorate the holiday.

On Saturday, June 26th, I performed at the Greenbriar II Clubhouse auditorium, where I live, located in Brick. I have performed for my friends and neighbors for the past 6 years. This year's show was entitled, "A SALUTE TO FAMOUS DIVAS OF STAGE & SCREEN". I saluted Metropolitan opera divas, Renee Fleming and Anna Nebtrenko, movie legends, Deanna Durbin, Jane Powell, Kathryn Grayson, and Ann Blythe, and, with the help of a guest baritone, sang duets of Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. I sang songs of Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Dianna Ross. There were show tunes made famous by broadway stars, Julie Andrews and Bernadette Peters. My show ended with "Broadway Blockbusters", a 5 song medley from broadway's longest running shows, One, Beauty & the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, Miss Saigon, and Les Miserables. For my encore, I sang "I'll Be Seeing You", made famous by the greatest "gal" of all, Liberace!

In July, I participated in a benefit concert at the Church of Good Shepherd Lutheran, in Point Pleasant. I sang several of the songs listed above. The event was a fundraiser in support of the church's summer youth programs.

Later that month, I competed in the Second Senior Idol Contest, that was held at the historic Strand Theater, in Lakewood. I was among 15 contests, 55 and over who performed. Although I received high praise from the 3 judges, I didn't win. Not to worry, though ... I really enjoyed myself and was thrilled to sing on the stage of that gorgeous theater.

On August 14th, I participated in a Gong-A-Thon, another fundraiser, sponsored by The Algonquin Arts Theater. That was a fun show, and another occasion to sing on the stage of a theater with great acoustics and sound system. I won a prize for the Best Interpretation.

Yes, it was a busy summer, and, as you can see, I too, am having the time of my life, now that I am 60 and beyond! My plan for the year ahead is to continue to keep busy by performing with my sisters in the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and in giving one woman shows of my own.

The Medford Central Record ran a story about our New Jersey Cameo Club sisters, who reside in Leisure Towne, Southampton, a 55 and over adult community, that was published the week of September 9th. Reporter Dubravka Kolumbic wrote a lovely feature article about our sisters, in which she highlighted their personal stories, and captured the essence of SENIOR AMERICA, INC., and the MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT organization.

Thanks go to Lyn Gibson, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2000, for organizing the "elegant ladies", who were interviewed that day in the clubhouse auditorium. The ladies present were: Lyn Gibson, MSNJSA 2000; Elva Lawrence, MSNJSA 1987; Doris Liberta, MSNJSA 1998; Gloria Segal, Barbara Ross, Leah Whelan, and Marianne Szumski. Names of other past queens were mentioned, who either had moved away, or were deceased.

THERE SHE IS! .... MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010

Introducing Mrs. Rebecca Orsatti, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010, crowned on Thursday, June 3rd, at Harrah's in Atlantic City.

The search to find that "gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans" has ended. On Thursday June 3rd, the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2010 was held at Harrah's in Atlantic City. The Class of 2010 was made up of thirteen elegant ladies, all very impressive, as each contestant dazzled both judges and audience with her unique display of charm, witt, intelligence, and beauty. The crowd kept their own scores, and cheered along for their personal favorites, but in the end, everyone knew that the fate of these women rested in the judges' hands.

A hush fell over the audience in the Concert Venue Theater as the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2010 was drawing to an end. The ladies entered the stage for the final time, dressed again in fashionable evening gowns, and each one was awarded a single rose. They stood tall, smiling broadly, and anxiously awaited the judges' decision.

Finally, their names were called, beginning with the runners up to comprise the QUEEN'S COURT, ending with the reigning queen: BETTY PRUITT, hometown/Marmora, 4th Runner up; LEAH J. WHELAN, hometown/Southamptom, 3rd Runner up; MARTI NOEL-STIER, hometown/South River, 2nd Runner up; PATRICIA GENOVESE, hometown/Dover, 1st Runner up; and REBECCA ORSATTI, hometown/Atlantic City, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010. Everyone clapped and cheered for Becky, as she is affectiontely known, while she quickly donned her crown, banner, and was handed a trophy and a bouquet of red roses. She took her traditional walk across the stage, waving and throwing kisses to the adoring crowd. The scene that ensued was one of general, but happy mayhem, as family, friends, admirers and well wishers, ascended onto the stage to congratulate their new queen, and to take pictures.

Immediately following the pageant, a gala reception was held for the Queen and her Court in the Eden Lounge. However, Queen Rebecca had to leave the reception early, in order to attend her first TV interview. Kathy Orr, weatherlady at Channel 3 News, Philadelphia hosts a special show on Thursdays called "Down the Shore". In between the weather, she does special news segments about what's happening at various New Jersey and Delaware shore towns. On Thursday June 3rd, she and CBS3 News Philadelphia crew were on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in front of the Rain Forest Cafe. Ms Orr heard about the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2010 PAGEANT, and wanted very much to interview the newly crowned queen. Becky was interviewed live at 6:15 pm, but anyone wishing to see her can log onto CBS3.com.

MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT- MEET THE CLASS OF 2010!

June 3rd is quickly approaching and Harrah's in Atlantic City will be buzzing with excitement as plans for the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2010 are well underway. The pagaent will be held in the Concert Venue Theater at 1:00 pm.

On Tuesday, May 11th an orientation meeting was held for the CLASS OF 2010, at Leisuretown in Southampton. The contestants were treated to to lunch beforehand, which was hosted by Johanne Santori, MS NJ SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT STATE DIRECTOR, and trustees of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. The hall was arranged by Lyn Gibson, MSNJSA 2000, NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB member, and resident of Leisuretown.

Johanne Santori began the meeting with a warm message of welcome, and then explained the pageant process to the contestants. Dale Maglia, President of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB talked about membership and eligibility requirements to join the club. Delores Puzio, Showcase Director of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, spoke of how the club spreads smiles and cheer by performing for senior groups in the State. Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009, was on hand to speak about her experiences during this year of her reign, awarded the contestants a plaque of appreciation and participation, and was helpful later on, during rehearsal.

This year's class of "elegant ladies", come from all over the Garden State. They are all so gifted and talented, and possess impressive resumes. And now, here they are! A brief resume of the candidates:

1. MARTY NOEL STIER, South River, talent/singer, won the title, Mrs. New Jersey International 2000. (Not in photo)

2. CAROL JOHNSON, Trenton, talent/karate. Teaches crocheting and arts & crafts Department on Aging, City of Trenton. "I try to use my God given gifts as much as I can to help others, and to be a role model for my children and grandchildren".

3. PAULINE RITA PETTO, Manalapan, talent/tap dancer. "I heard about the pageant from my mentor, Laverne Stokes (MS SENIOR AMERICA 1985). I have a very large family that extends all the way south to North Carolina. They are all excited for me, and all are coming to cheer me on to victory".

4. LEAH J. WHELAN, Southampton, talent/singer. A lover of barbershop singing, Leah has 30 years experience singing in ladies barbershop groups such as: Sweet Adelines (Jersey Sound Chapter); Good Time 4 Quartet; Champagne Edition; and Act 2. She performs in shows in Leisuretown, and was encouraged to enter the pageant by her friend and mentor, Lyn Gibson, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2000.

5. BETTY PRUITT, Marmora, talent/baton twirler. Betty learned baton twirling in high school, and won several competitions. She continued her interest into her adult life because "it is a fun way to exercise". Betty is the Executive Director of the MISS CAPE MAY COUNTY PAGEANT, which is the precursor to the MISS NEW JERSEY PAGEANT. A retired school teacher of 34 years, Betty has many interests that keep her busy; pageant life, scholarship fundraising, church bell choir, scrapbooking, and piano playing, to name a few.

6. BEVERLY PIERCE, Trenton, talent/poetry. Beverly enjoys reading poetry, and over the years, has written several poems of her own. She works for the Department on Aging, Trenton, as as teacher of arts and crafts.

7. MARIANNE SZUMSKI, Southampton, talent/singer. Marianne has known about the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT, for sometime because she lives with Gloria Segal, who has been a contestant and is a member of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. "I couldn't wait to turn 60 to enter the pageant". Marianne is also a writer, producer, and director. Her most recent show is called, "Scenes of Women", which was premiered at Leisuretown last year.

8. PATRICIA MARIE GENOVESE, Dover, talent/tap dancer. Patricia is an accomplished high school language arts teacher, published author, business woman, tap dancer and inspirational speaker. A committed community volunteer for animal causes and for women changing directions after divorce, loss by death, or overcoming addiction, she is one of best in the fundraising arena.

9. REBECCA ORSATTI, Atlantic City, talent/singer. Born and raised in Atlantic City, Becky graduated from AC High School. She kicked off her professional singing career singing with the Paul Mann Orchestra in Atlantic City. Some highlights of her career include: Opening act for shows like; Danny Thomas, Patti Page, "Professor" Irwin Corey, and Diane Carol. She has sung for the March of Dimes and Jerry Lewis Telethons, and at Miss America Pageant parties. Becky has also sung in New York City, Las Vegas, California, and dedicated her time to sing for wounded American veterans and various non-profit organizations. In 2006, she recorded her own CD entitled, "Starting Here Starting Now", which is dedicated in loving memory of her late husband Arnold. "Ballads inspire me because they tell a story of life and love. I also enjoy Jazz, Pop, Standards - and my favorite - Big Band Music".

10. MARIA CROWELL, Egg Harbor Township, talent/dancer. Maria is manager of "America ... Shall We Dance"?! Her dance group performed for the American Cancer Society, as well as other fundraising organizations. In 2007, Maria won a dance contest called Dancing With the Stars at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. She has done modeling, TV commercials, and has appeared in Hollywood movies as an "extra". Maria's hobbies include: kniting, embroidery, cooking, gardening and reading.

11. PATRICIA FRANZ, Mercerville, talent/singer. A very active performer in the Princeton, Trenton area, Patricia was discovered by Rose Majofsky, a member of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, who had attended one of Patricia's performances. She prefers to remain as active as active as possible, and is so excited to be in the pageant.

12. GAYLE A. LEE, Brielle, talent/singer. Gayle's special interests are: acting, singing, storyteller, cooking, and remaining close to family and maintaining family values. She worked with Bill Cosby Show as contestant coordinator, and at the Castle and Trump Casino in Atlantic City.

13. PHYLLIS J. BURTON, Whiting, talent/baton twirler. Phyllis learned twirling at a very young age, which eventually became her lifelong passion. Over the years Phyllis performed in many talent shows - just to have fun. During the 1980's, she was hired by the Willingboro Recreation Department as director/coach of a dance twirl team, called "The Sizzlers". Her girls won numerous awards, and performed in parades, recitals, fairs and competitions.

"AND THEY'RE OFF!" NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SETS RECORD

With winter vacation behind them, the "elegant ladies" of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, did a record number of showcases in March, totaling 7. Two shows in particular, deserve special mention, Saint Francis Residential Community, and Saint Francis Oaks Retirement Community, both located in Denville, New Jersey.

The shows were arranged by Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009. She often visits her dear godmother who resides there and it was her idea to bring the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB there to perform.

Denville is a charming city, about 30 minutes north of Newark. Most of the ladies in the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB live in Monmouth and Ocean counties, which is located further south. So, the trip took almost 2 hours, but everyone was happy to go, since it opened up a new territory for the club. Both performances were on the same day, one afternoon, the other early evening.

Bernadette's godmother was so thrilled to see and hear Bernadette, and she enjoyed everyone else's performance as well. The ladies were so happy to have made this effort. It turned out to be a memorable show for all, because Bernadette found out that her godmother passed away quite suddenly later in the month.

Another memorable showcase was at The Chelsea in Toms River. A fairly new adult residential facility, the outdoor grounds have lovely gardens and gazebos, and the main entrance and lounge is tastefully decorated. The dining hall held about 300 hundred people, and our ladies once again rose to the occasion, and gave a fabulous show. NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB Showcase Director Delores Puzio had worked for over a year to book a showcase at The Chelsea, and her efforts proved successful. Thanks Delores for all your hard work!

FEBRUARY WINTER BREAK

January 2010 turned out to be a busy month of performing for the elegant ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. As a result, NJCC SHOWCASE DIRECTOR Delores Puzio declared the month of February as a time for everyone to get some well earned rest and relaxation. It turned out her timing couldn't have been better, since this month has made the history books as being the worst winter on record for most of the nation. Meteorologists across the country have reported record snowfalls in 49 of our 50 States. So, even though some of our lovely ladies may be in warmer climates at this time, they may still be experiencing record low temperatures as well.

As we all dig out from under, let us not forget that VALENTINE'S DAY is tomorrow. Here's wishing all of our readers a wonderful and special day spent with loved ones.

Last month was an exciting time for MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT DIRECTOR, JOHANNE SANTORI. The following interview in Q & A format is an account of her involvement with this year's MISS AMERICA PAGEANT.
Q: When and where was the pageant held?
A: At the fabulous Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. The pageant and related activities lasted 12 days. The final pageant was held on Saturday, January 30th, and was televised
nationwide on TLC cable channel.
Q: What is your title, and could you describe your job?
A: I am a hostess. The 53 contestants are divided into groups. My partner and I took care
of 9 women. As hostess, I am responsible for the welfare and comfort of the women in my
group. I make sure that my girls understand their daily schedule, which include rehearsals,
and other activites and events during the 12 days of the pageant.
Q: How many years have you been involved with the MISS AMERICA organization?
A: 20 years. In 2006, when the organization moved to Las Vegas, they invited me to their new
home.
Q: Did you fly to Vegas alone?
A: No, this year I went with 12 other ladies who flew from Atlantic City.
Q: Did any of your girls make the finals?
A: Yes. Stephanie Witter, MISS TENNESSEE, 3rd runner up, and Kristy Cavinder, MISS
CALIFORNIA, 1st runner up.
Q: What was the big white tent backstage?
A: That was the dressing room, located close to the stage to make it easier for the contestants
to make quick costume changes. That's where we hostesses stayed to dress our girls.
Q: What was the atmosphere like in there?
A: Although it was very tense, we hostesses tried to keep the girls as calm as possible.
Q: The star studded judges' panel was very impressive. Did you talk to any?
A: I spoke briefly to Rush Limbaugh as he took a break during the interviews. He was
gracious and friendly to me.
Q: In your opinion, is the pageant different today than it was 20 years ago?
A: Yes. Today, the judges choose 15 finalists, then start eliminating by 2's. Instead of the top
5 that remains, there is the top 7, then they choose the winner, starting with the 4th
runner up, etc.
Also, the media, TLC cable channel and Comcast network demanded a lot of the contestants'
time to appear in different activities. I had to escort my ladies to many locations throughout the
hotel for filming sessions, and to a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of
Planet Hollywood's new condominium building on Friday, January 29th.
Q: Do you have any other comments regarding the pageant?
A: I feel very privileged to volunteer for the MISS AMERICA PAGEANT. These young
women represent all that is good and positive about our country and the present generation. It is because of them that I have hope for the future.

2009 - 2010, HAPPY ENDINGS, NEW BEGINNINGS

The year 2009 held numerous happy times for the "elegant women" who make up MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. By reading past articles on this blog, one can get an idea of how hard the members worked all year long to make a difference in the lives of the people they reach.

The holiday season was no exception. Ladies in the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB travelled to many parts of the State, giving Christmas and Hannukah shows. A special thanks to Rebecca Orsatti, whose repertoire included Hannukah songs. She lead the audience at the Congregation Oher-Shalom in Marlboro, in a fun sing-a-long. Rebecca is a professional singer and has appeared in Atlantic City casinos for many years. She has released a CD album of beautiful romantic ballads for easy listening, which is for sale, by calling her at: 609-344-7802.

After spending a relaxing vacation in Disneyworld with her family, Queen Bernadette Dudek returned home to resumed her schedule of appearances. The photo at the top was taken in November, and she is accompanied by, Johanne Santori, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGENT DIRECTOR. Bernadette appeared for three days as hostess for the ATLANTIC CITY LEAGUE OF MUNICIPALITIES CONVENTION.

Bernadette shared a humorous story with her Cameo Club sisters lately. At a recent parade in Seaside, an ardent and overzealous male admirer, emerged from the crowd as she passed by and asked for her hand in marriage! She is so pretty, how could anyone resist her charm. Way to go, Bernadette!

Delores Puzio did an expecially outstanding job this year, holding two difficult positions: as President of NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, she always kept members informed of news and events throughout the year(s); as director of NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASES, she arranged the shows all over the State. Delores Puzio and the present slate of officers, including Lyn Gibson, Cathy Clark, and Doris Criscione have served NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, admirably during the past 4 years. The installation of the slate of newly elected officers will be held on January 13, 2010. They are: Dale Maglia, President, Jo Ann Gordon, Vice-President, Agnes Traschetti, Secretary, and Joan Kaplan, Treasurer.

Johanne Santori, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT STATE DIRECTOR, has announced very exciting plans for the 2010 pageant, which will be a special 35th anniversary celebration, to held at Harrah's in Atlantic City, on June 3rd. Our "sisterhood" is strong because of its loving members. May they "live long and prosper" in the coming year, and may they continue to bring joy and happiness wherever they go.

"TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY"!

There are three words to describe the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB Christmas Party: FOOD, FUN, and FELLOWSHIP. The event was once again held at the Lobster Shanty Restaurant in Toms River, on Friday, December 11th.
The FOOD was delicious and was served by a courteous and attentive waite staff. There was a cash bar, and a mimosa fountain which flowed amply all evening long.
The FUN was provided all night long by the great musical team of Steve and Debbie Berger. During dinner, they played background music, that did not interfere with people's conversations.
Afterwards, they performed all the songs on everyone's wish list, from sentimental ballads, to lively line dance tunes. During Steve's rendition of "It's a Wonderful World", couples stopped dancing, and others in the room quieted down to listen to the lyrics. His tender voice brought sighs and a tear or two out of the guests. Debbie did wonderful solos of her own. Her alto voice is clear and mellow to the ear. Together, they made a "dynamite duo". Their fun duet, "I Ain't Got Nobody", evoked memories of the legendary musical couple, Louie Prima and Keely Smith.
It was an evening of good cheer and FELLOWSHIP, as guests talked gaily and got caught up with latest news of mutual interest. The rafle consisted of 5 beautiful baskets of edible and non-edible items. Everyone bought tickets in anticipation of winning. Norma McGhie and family won two items!
Everyone stood to applaude Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009, as she entered the room. She was radiant and looked absolutely lovely, dressed in a yellow two-pieced bustiere gown. Later in the evening, she delighted everyone by singing a popular Hawaiian Christmas song accompanied by Steve.
Once again, the glitter and glamour was provided by the gorgeous ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, all of whom were decked out in their "holiday best". They are a great example of the "age of elegance". Long may they always shine!
Kudos to Jo Ann Gordon and the ladies on the committee for a job well done. Their attention to detail was evident.

LADIES OF NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB DAZZLE CROWDS IN ATLANTIC CITY

Despite the chilly temperatures, crowds of people gathered for the Atlantic City Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 28th. The parade route started at the beginning of Atlantic Avenue at the monument, ending at the outlet shops.
On hand for the annual event "braving the elements" were eight elegant ladies from the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. They road atop a gleaming and colorful holiday float, that came especially equipped with seats, thus making the ride more comfortable. The entourage included: Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009, and members of The Queen's Court; Rebecca Orsatti, Kay Vique, and Carol Lelli. Other ladies in attendance were: Johanne Santori, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT STATE DIRECTOR, Barby Jo Crema, Marge Wanamaker, and Agnes Raimondi.
They dazzled the crowd, each one stunningly dressed, and sporting the latest in "haute fur couture." Waving and smiling, they threw candy to the children along the parade route. Everyone had a great time, merrily ushering in the holiday season, despite the cold and windy winter weather.

WHAT HAS ONE NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB QUEEN BEEN UP TO LATELY?

On the evening of Saturday, September 12th, Josephine Araniti, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2007, gave a show at the Greenbriar II Clubhouse in Brick where she resides. The following article is a reprint from the November 2009 edition of THE BRIAR II NEWS, written by Mr. Ren Relli, which has been expanded for clarification purposes.

A WOMAN FOR ALL SEASONS

It's becoming an annual R & A event (at Greenbriar II), when on September 12th, Josephine Araniti dazzled our residents once again with an eclectic array of songs that included: a French Art song, operatic arias, 60's pop, R & B, country, inspirational, patriotic and Broadway melodies. The theme of this year's show, A WOMAN FOR ALL SEASONS, meant that there was something for everyone. She even did a comedy routine entitled her "Job Resume", a cute play on words which was quite funny.

With her sidekicks as backup, "The Fabulous Four", familiar GBII residents were: Jack McGuigan, Michael Bocchino, Frank Smith and Bob Heine, who surrounded our gal in a nice rendition of "A Pretty Girl is Like A Melody", which opened the show.

With Bernice Kephart and Joe DeSanctis accompanying on the piano, and the audio team providing the orchestral background, our Josephine's voice filled the hall with that beautiful voice everyone here expected. A special highlight were the Puccini arias. A cathedral-like sound effect from the big soundboard was used for "O Mio Babbino Caro", letting her high notes really soar through the hall.

Josie did her usual good job of describing the history of her songs all the way to the Grand Finale, where the "FAB FOUR" and the audience joined her in a patriotic tribute to our country. A great advantage for me, for clamped on my head were the headphones (which I) used for monitoring and tweaking the microphones and cueing the tape decks. It was the perfect place (for me) to enjoy the music. Bravo, Josie!

In an expansive gesture, Josie sings "Signore, Ascolta", from the opera TURANDOT, by Puccini.

In stark contrast, Josie sings an R & B medley called,"A 60's PARTY". Here, she sings, "It's My Party".

She finishes the medley with, "These Boots Are Made For Walking", a song that made Nancy Sinatra famous. Pictured at the piano is Bernice Kephart.

Now in her 5th season, Josie always tries to include audience participation in her shows. The "Fabulous Four" joins her for the Grand Finale, in a stirring rendition of GOD BLESS AMERICA, LET FREEDOM RING.

The ladies of the New Jersey Cameo Club held their final meeting of the year, on Wednesday, October 14th, at the Dover Senior Center in Toms River. A tasty luncheon was served, that was catered by Cafe Italia, Route 37 Toms River, consisting of chicken in a mushroom sauce, pasta, green salad, and a delicious homemade potato salad, provided by Dolores Peronace. Several scrumptious desserts were compliments of Jo Ann Gordon.

The meeting followed, in which many topics were discussed quickly, in order to allow plenty of time on the agenda for the Club's main purpose: the election of the new slate of officers who will serve the New Jersey Cameo Club for the next two years.

Fourty members attended the meeting to cast their ballots. The voting procedure was done by secret paper ballot. The ballots were collected and tallied by Marge Wanamaker and Norma McGhie, who are members of the nominating committee, assisted by Micki Bordi and Rose Majofsky. The results were then read by President Delores Puzio. After that, the committee shredded the ballots.

The newly elected officers spoke briefly, to thank the membership, and each promised to do her best to keep the New Jersey Cameo Club running as smoothly as their predecessors.

Installation of the new slate of officers will take place in January, 2010.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 pm.

"A FUNNY THING HAPPENED" AT THE COLUMBUS DAY PARADE THIS YEAR

This year, MSNJSA State Pageant Director, Johanne Santori, requested a vintage car for Queen Bernadette. Here they are pictured in the shiny green convertible, vintage ala late 1920's, with MS STAFFORD 2009, standing alongside.

The weather on Sunday, October 11th, was perfect, sunny and unusually warm, and there was hardly any breeze. The New Jersey Queens began to feel warm, so they shed the weight of their fur coats, soon after these photos were taken. NJSA State Director, Johanne Santori had a friend who lives in Atlantic City and owns that green vintage automobile. While she and her husband Adeo drove up the Garden State Parkway in their stylish car, (and who knows how fast he drove), her friend could only drive his car 35 miles all the way to Seaside. What a friend indeed!

Delores Puzio, NJCC President, and MSDESA 2008, also arranged for another car from Lester Glenn Hundai, so that this year, Queen Bernadette Dudek, MNNJSA 2009, might have a royal entourage to follow her. However, here's where the story took a turn for the worse. The car dealer backed out at the last minute, because there was no 2010 convertible available for them to advertise, and he wouldn't allow last year's model to be in the prade. So, Delores spoke to the Parade Marshal, who then made a few phone calls, and found another friend who also had a vintage car.

So, all should have turned out fine, right? End of story. Well, not so fast. No sooner did Delores Puzio, MSDESA 2008, Josephine Araniti, MSNJSA 2007, and Jo Ann Gordon, MSNJ 2008, get into that buggy, when steam began to emerge from under the hood. They took the photo above, smiled bravely, and hoped for the best. But, alas, it was not meant to be. The car's owner declared that he couldn't fix the car on the spot, and needed to call for a tow truck. Therefore, they were out of a car, and subsequently, out of the parade. The three ladies kissed Queen Bernadette and Johanne, and wished them a happy parade, and went home.

It was reported later, that Bernadette, received many cheers and bravos along the parade route. She looked beautiful and radiated such warmth as she waved the "queen's wave", and threw kisses to all her constituents. It was her day, and she was great. As for the three queens, they had our day. Their only regret was not to to have been able support her on her day. The idea of having a queen's entourage was good, and hopefully, Delores can try again next year.

NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB SHOWCASE, The Regency in Toms River, July 23, 2009

Recently, one of my Cameo Club sisters gave me this picture, since I am in it, as a keepsake. (I am the lady on the far right, chest out, proudly wearing my MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2007 banner). As I gazed further at it, a proverb came to mind, "a picture is worth a thousand words". So, I would like to share my thoughts on what I see in this photo and what it means to me.

It was a very hot summer day, the kind of day that one should stay home and avoid the hot sun and oppressive humidity. Yet, our sisters turned out in large numbers to entertain for the residents at the Regency. The center is dedicated to working with people who are in all stages of Alzheimers Disease. The NJ Cameo Club joins with the Regency, by bringing our own kind of love and cheer to these very special and needy people.

The next thing I noticed, was the wide age range and the variety of our active performers. Of course, I wouldn't point them out specifically, but they are between 60 and 85. Each "elegant lady", can charm a crowd in her own unique way. We have singers of the old songs, big band, popular, country, and opera. And then, there are the dancers, who do ethnic and jazz tap. Do you like impersonators of famous Hollywood stars? There are there!

The photo shows the different ranks of the sisterhood, a kind of protocol. Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009, our reigning Queen, is the only one who wears both crown and banner. Past Queens wear banners that show the year of their reign. The rest of the ladies have all been contestants in past MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANTS. They have joined the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB, and perform in all our shows. At present, NJCC has 55 members, most of whom are still active performers, who also perform during the year. The photo shown here represents just a small portion of performing members.

We are fortunate to have 2 National Queens from New Jersey, and in this case, I will point them out. Laverne Stokes, dressed in clown costume, is MS SENIOR AMERICA 1985, and in the center dressed a dark blue gown is Sandra Greco, MS SENIOR AMERICA 2003.

Lastly, the photo shows that our ladies come in all shapes and sizes. Our ladies illustrate one of the goals of Senior America, and its affiliated State pageants: and that is, "it is the search for inner beauty". This point will be emphasized in the months ahead, as we prepare for the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2010.

The year 2009 marked the 29th MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. As always, "elegant ladies"came from across the fruited plains to compete for the coveted title of MS SENIOR AMERICA. Sonia Rheinhardt once again produced a glamorous and world class production. In the opening number, the ladies of the class of 2009 were dressed in yellow, and stood stationary, as they gently moved their feathered fans to the song "Amapola", sung by Andrea Bocelli. Colonel Macalise was a funny master of ceremonies, and did well in "stretching the time", whenever it was needed. Past national queens, and the Queen's Choir provided most of the entertainment in between. Their performances were all wonderful.

The Class of 2009, was small, 30 States in all, including the US Virgin Islands. Because of this, there was only one Preliminary Pageant, in which all 30 contestants were seen. In spite of the very long afternoon, the audience remained patient. All the contestants did their best and each lady had her own special gift(s) that appealed to both the judges and the audience. The next day the top 10 finalists were chosen, and the battle for the winner was on.

Cheers and screams rang throughout the theater whenever Bernadette appeared, and when she made the top 10, everyone was happy. She looked every inch a queen, and performed flawlessly in every catagory. Then, the atmosphere turned electric, when she made the Queen's Court. Her family, friends, amateur audience score keepers, and New Jersey Cameo Club sisters, held their breath, in anticipation of the judges results. An audible show of disbelief was heard around the room, when she made 3rd runner up. It was obvious that Bernadette had captured the hearts of many people that day, but unfortunately, the judges decision was final.

We extend our congratulations to the winner, Gayle King, from New York, our new, MS SENIOR AMERICA 2009, and, we are also very proud of Bernadette Dudek, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009, who made the QUEEN'S COURT, a very high and exhaulted place to be.

will travel to Atlantic City, to compete for

the coveted title of MS SENIOR AMERICA 2009.

Queen Bernadette will represent the Garden State.

The event will take place at Harrah's Hotel and Resort,

during the week of October 4th through 8th.

The Preliminary show, is Tuesday, October 6th, and the

Final Pageant is Wednesday, October 7th.

The summer of 2009 was set ablaze by the stellar performances from the elegant ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB. For the first time, Our Ambassadors of Love charmed audiences in the southern part of the State, in the cities of Ocean City, Absecon, Atlantic City, and Northfield.

One evening in particular was a NJCC Showcase, on June 17th, at Greenbriar North in Marlboro for the Deborah Club Banquet and Ball. After the show, the ladies were invited to a lavish dinner. Many people from the audience stopped by their table to congratulate them on their fine performances.

Then, on Sunday July 19th, the ladies performed on the boardwalk at the Kennedy Mall in Atlantic City. The weather was absolutely perfect, and many people packed the outdoor theater for the 4:00 pm show. This show is a special one for NJCC, because the show lasts two hours. That means that members who live farther away, and can't always perform with the club, made a special effort to drive to Atlantic City to take part. It was a great chance for the "sisters" to see each other, and tearful reunions were commonplace. Kudos to the audience, who stayed and watched the entire show, in spite of the strong, late afternoon sun.

Next, NJCC entertained at a luncheon for the "Red Hatters", at the Grenville Hotel in Bayhead, on July 22nd. Jo Ann Gordon, MSNJSA2008, received a surprise visit by her daughter-in-law and granddaughter. The toddler, about 2 years old, stayed quiet, just long enough to hear grandma Jo Ann sing, then she began to upstage the performers. So, smart mommy scooped her up, gave grandma Jo Ann a kiss, and they quickly departed. Such a precious child, and a memorable moment.

The wonderful ladies of NJCC continued all summer long to give vibrant and lively shows, with such love and caring for their audiences. In spite of personal problems or physical ills, they shined and dazzled wherever they appeared. With a succsessful summer season behind them, the ladies look forward to the year ahead, with renewed vigor and sense of purpose to bring music, laughter and joy wherever may go.

The courtroom at Manchester Town Hall was alive with excitement, on Monday, July 13th, as family, friends, NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB ladies, and citizens of Manchester came to honor Queen Bernadette Dudek. A resident of Manchester who resides in La Renaissance Adult Community, Bernadette was awarded a PROCLAMATION OF ACHIEVEMENT by Mayor Michael Fressoli and the Manchester Town Council, for having won the title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009.

Bernadette was among 12 very talented and elegant ladies, age 60 and over, who came from all around the State of New Jersey, and graced the stage of the Concert Venue Theater at Harrah’s in Atlantic City.

A retired State of New Jersey employee, Bernadette and her late husband Al moved to Manchester 2 years ago. Since then, she has been very active in her community. For her talent, Bernadette sang a wonderful rendition of “I Could Have Danced All Night”.

Bernadette also won first prize in the first SENIOR AMERICAN IDOL CONTEST on Sunday, July 12th. The event was held at the Strand Theater in Lakewood, and was sponsored by WOBM-AM radio, hosted by Mary Ann Levy, of the Bob and Mary Ann Levy Show. She won $500.00 and an appearance to sing the national anthem at a Blue Claws game.

As winner of the State pageant, Bernadette will represent the Garden State, and will compete in the national pageant for the title of MS SENIOR AMERICA 2009. The MS SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2009 will also be held at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, during the week of October 4th - 8th.

Last year, Harrah's Resort and Casino became the new home of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT. This year, the 2009 pageant was held on Thursday, June 4th. Elegant ladies 60 years old and over, came from different parts of the Garden State, and graced the stage of the Concert Venue Theater.

The pageant began with a patriotic salute led by the Atlantic City High School Junior ROTC, and a stirring rendition of "God Bless America", was sung by New Jersey State Pageant Director, Johanne Santori. Helen Halpin McCarney served as Mistress of Ceremonies, and was assisted by Johanne Santori. A comedienne and fabulous entertainer, Helen's comedy routines, songs and impersonations brought the house down with laughter. At 93 years young, pianist Elva Lawrence, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 1987, delighted the audience with a surprise medley of songs, and had everyone clapping and singing along. Choreographer Melanie Brough staged a clever number for the contestants to the song "LADY IN RED", in which she also danced. Operatic soprano, Josephine Araniti, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2007, sang the aria, "Signore Ascolta", from Puccini's opera, TURANDOT. As her final high Bb rang through the theater, people stood up and shouted "bravo"!

Outgoing queen, Jo Ann Gordon presented a video montage of her year's reign. Her farewell speech was touching and eloquent. She concluded with a poignant rendition of the song "Home", from the Broadway show, WICKED. The audience was moved by her performance and applauded her generously. Jo Ann Gordon, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2008, is a beautiful, intelligent, generous and gracious woman, and as Queen, she stayed true to the ideals of SENIOR AMERICA. She has the love and respect of all her NJ Cameo Club sisters.

The moment finally arrived and a hush fell over the audience, as everyone waited anxiously for the announcement of the judges results. The ladies lined up across the stage, dressed in gorgeous evening gowns, each hoping to be chosen MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009. But, alas, the enviable title could only be awarded to one woman ... and that lucky lady is: BERNADETTE DUDEK! The audience was delighted with the judges decision, as they stood up and applauded and cheered for their new Queen, Bernadette Dudek.

Bernadette comes from Manchester and lives in La Rennaisance Adult Community. A tall and statuesque woman, Bernadette looked stunning, wearing a light blue, A-shaped strapeless gown, with a demure front slit. For her Talent Presentation, she sang a lively rendition of "I Could Have Danced All Night". When her name was called, Bernadette broke down, shedding tears of happiness. Outgoing Queen Jo Ann Gordon, did the honors of crowning Bernadette, pinned on the banner, and presented her with a trophy and a bouquet of red roses. As she took the traditional Queen's walk downstage, Bernadette looked simply radiant, smiling and throwing kisses to all her subjects. Jim Craine, popular Atlantic City entertainer affectionately known as the "singing lifeguard", sang the "Ms New Jersey Senior America" theme song. At that point, all pandemonium broke loose when photographers, family and friends, and well-wishers emerged onto the stage to congratulate their new Queen.

The 2009 Ladies of the Queen's Court includes: REBECCA ORSATTI, vocalist, 1st runner up; KAY VIGUE, vocalist, 2nd runner up; EILEEN T. RENDERS, presentation of health issues, 3rd runner up; CAROL LELLI, dance, 4th runner up.

During the coming year, Bernadette will have many opportunities and responsibilities as MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009. One responsibility in particular is to carry on the mission of SENIOR AMERICA INC., which is "to promote the positive aspects of aging". As delegate, Queen Bernadette Dudek will represent the State of New Jersey at the National Pageant, which will also be held at Harrah's, during the week of October 4th - 8th. At that time, she will compete for the title of MS SENIOR AMERICA 2009. The NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT and the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB are proud to sponsor Bernadette and wish her well.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE CLASS OF 2009

Thirteen elegant ladies from the Class of 2009 had the opportunity to meet each at a luncheon that was sponsored by the New Jersey Senior America Cameo Club. The event was held at The Regency at Dover in Toms River, on Monday, May 18th. The luncheon was organized by President Delores Puzio, and committee, which included Lyn Gibson, vice-president, Cathy Clark, secretary, and Doris Criscione, treasurer. Also in attendance, was New Jersey State Pageant Director, Johanne Santori.

This reporter spoke to several ladies afterward, by phone and asked them to comment on the luncheon and the upcoming pageant.

Johanne Santori: All the ladies this year possess brains, poise, talent and beauty. Their preliminary interviews were so impressive ... each lady has a different, yet impressive resume. I expect great things from them all!

Delores Puzio: I was very impressed at the friendliness of all the ladies at the luncheon. They talked to each other very easily, and were supportive of one another. There was much bonding in the room. I welcome them all into our "sisterhood".

Lyn Gibson: Can't wait to see these ladies onstage. They all look so beautiful. I know that they will wow the judges!

Doris Criscione: This class has sold a record amount of tickets. It seems each lady has brought her own fans to cheer her on.

Cathy Clark: Ladies seem quite wired up and eager to go. They look great and come in all shapes and sizes, and each seems to possess a high level of intelligence and sophistication .... something the judges look for.

Jo Ann Gordon: It has been an honor and a pleasure to meet the Class of 2009. I shared some of my experiences as this year's queen, and I hope that I was helpful in giving them a glimpse of all the wonderful things that are in store for them. I wish them well on June 4th, and I look forward to crowning the new queen who will best exemplify the "dignity and maturity of all Senior Americans".

Barby Jo Crema: I think the contestants are all lovely women. We are so lucky to have a beautiful theater like Harrah's. It makes for a more glamorous pageant.

Bernadette Dudek: Every lady is very special, and I am glad I had the opportunity to meet them.

Barbara Ross: The ladies are great. Whatever happens, we are all winners.

Gloria Segal: I was impressed with all the lovely women in this year's class. Last year, I had to drop out of the pageant at the last minute due to illness. I am so happy that this year I was accepted again. I am feeling great and will do my best.

These are just a few comments from our fabulous ladies. The stage at Harrah's is ready. The MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2009 is just days away. Who will be crowned the new queen, who will then go on to represent the Garden State in the national pageant in October?

"Curtain up! Light the lights! They've got nothing to hit but the heights!" The paraphrased words of this popular song from the musical "Gypsy" describe the atmosphere at Harrah's in Atlantic City these days. The air is filled with excitement in anticipation of the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2009. On Thursday, June 4th, thirteen beautiful ladies who have reached the "age of elegance", or 60 years and over, will grace the stage of the Concert Venue Theater, to compete for the coveted title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009.

This year's class started out with 15 women, but 2 dropped out for personal reasons. The thirteen gracious ladies who remain, have been busy sharpening their skills to impress the judges. They will be judged in 4 catagories: Evening Gown, Philosophy of Life, Personal Interview, and Talent.

Lights! Music! Action! Fifteen elegant ladies, 60 years and older, who come from different parts of the Garden State, will grace the stage at Harrah’s to compete for the coveted title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2009.

Harrah’s Resort Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City will again host the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2009. The event will be held on Thursday, June 4th in the Concert Venue Theater at 1:00 pm.

Contestants are judged in four categories: Interview, Philosophy of Life, Evening Gown, and Talent. Upon winning the State title, the Queen becomes the delegate from New Jersey and will compete in the national pageant which will also be held at Harrah’s in October.

Back by popular demand, comedienne Helen Halpin McCarney, who is also Ms Senior America 2005, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. Outgoing Queen JoAnn Gordon of Brick, will deliver her farewell address, sing, and crown the winner. The program will include an operatic performance, popular singers, a pianist, dancers, and the appearance of local dignitaries. The pageant is rated general, and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB GIVES TAX DAY RELIEF

Little did the 3 Queens from the New Jersey Cameo Club realize how happy they made the members of the Ocean Township Rotary Club, on Wednesday, April 15th. Current NJSA Queen Jo Ann Gordon coordinated the appearance for the Rotary Club's weekly luncheon which was held at The Renaissance Hotel in Ocean Township. She asked Josephine Araniti, MS NJSA 2007, and Delores Puzio, MS DELAWARE SA 2008 to appear with her. The ladies were invited to a sumptuous lunch beforehand. They thought that the members who sat at their table were so interesting to talk to and were very gracious dinner companions.

Of special interest which occurred during lunch was a fun activity called "happy dollars". Any member could stand up and tell about what made them happy, or sometimes sad, and then offer as many "dollars" that they wished to. The dollars then go into the Club's treasury. That afternoon, one member after another welcomed the 3 Queens, putting in 3 dollars each time. Later, it was revealed that the ladies' presence helped to raise quite a bit of money.

At the conclusion of lunch, the 3 Queens were invited to the podium. Josephine spoke about the history of Senior America, Inc. and New Jersey Senior America: Jo Ann talked about the Ms New Jersey Senior America Pageant: and Delores spoke about the New Jersey Cameo Club. The ladies entertained beautifully, and received a warm applause and standing ovation from an adoring audience.

Kudos to the 3 Queens. You made the "sisterhood" proud!

A SALUTE TO ELVA LAWRENCE, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 1987

Elva Lawrence is a very special lady. At 92 years young, she is still a performing member of the New Jersey Cameo Club. An accomplished pianist, she delights audiences young and old with her surprise "twists" on the piano classics. At first, you think that you were in for 10 minutes of "long haired" music. Then, after a serious introduction, and a flurry of fanfares, she does a quick reversal, and plays one popular song after another, meshing each tune with the skill of a true artist. Eventually, her performance becomes a sing-a-long, and everyone has a great time singing together.

The following interview, which is done in Q & A format, reveals Elva's unique and interesting story:
Q: How did you hear about the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT?

A: Through Jan Dickenson, who was the New Jersey State Queen in 1986, and also MS SENIOR AMERICA 1986. We both lived in Leisuretown in Southampton. She became my coach, and helped me through many rough spots.

Q: How old were you when you entered the pageant, and where was the State pageant held?

A: 70 years young. The fabulous Resorts in Atlantic City.

Q: Is it true that you play the organ, piano, digital keyboard, and accordian?
Which instrument did you choose for your talent presentation?

A. Yes. Piano. I played the Warsaw Concerto, with a surprise ending, playing the music of Scott Joplin.

Q: I understand that you are one of the guest artists who
will perform at the MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA PAGEANT 2009. How do you feel about it?

A. I am honored and humbled to be a part of the show, and I thank
our State Director Johanne Santori for choosing me. I am promising
a performance on the piano filled with new musical surprises
and twists, that will keep the audience humming and jumping!

Q: What was special in the year(s) following your reign?

A: In the year of my reign, I entertained regularly with
the NJ Cameo Club. Then, a year later, when Carol Einhorn,
also from Leisuretown won the State title 1988,
we received an invitation from the Burlington School District
to do educational programs. So, we formed a group called
"The Crown Jewels". It consisted of of we 3 Queens:
Jan Dickenson, me, and Carol Einhorn.
We toured the elementary schools there, on behalf of
NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA. Our goal was to form
a bond with the younger generation. The shows were fun,
and the kids were so dear. Our program lasted for 3 years.
I am so proud to have had the chance to promote
the positive aspects of aging in this way.

Q: Besides your busy schedule with NJ Cameo Club, what is your life like today?

A: At the present time I play accordian with
the Sterling String Band, and we have many "gigs",
ranging from senior organizations, to civic groups.
Our fees are inexpensive, and people love danciing to our music.
I also sing tenor in a female barbershop group called,
"The Harmonizers".

Q: Sounds like your life is very full. Will you ever retire?

A: Not a chance. Slow down, maybe a little. Music has
always been part of my life, and I just can't imagine myself
not getting involved in one way or another.

The title for today's article may sound like a product for removing stubborn stains and spots. But the play on words, describes exactly how we all felt on March 9th. Leisure Park in Lakewood, is a favorite place for the ladies of NJ Cameo Club to perform. The residents and staff are so kind, and look forward each year to our showcases.

Upon arrival that day, however, we noticed something was different ..... the building was on lockdown and we had to ring the doorbell. At first, we thought that it was a new security measure, but as we gazed through the glass doors waiting to be let in, we saw the staff walking around wearing masks, and rubber gloves. Also, there weren't any patients sitting around enjoying the sunshine and each other's company.

Eventually, a worker came to the door, and told us about an outbreak of stomach flu throughout the facility and suggested that we not come inside, and to cancel the show. We couldn't make that decision, since many ladies were travelling from a distance, and not everyone had arrived.

We give 2 shows there, one in the Revelations Unit, and one in Assisted Living. The activities director canceled the first show in Revelations, because too many residents were ill, but she decided to keep the second. We always play to a full house, but that day, only a handful of brave residents came to the cafeteria. They were so happy to see us, that they applauded especially loudly as if to make up for those who could not make it.

Delores Puzio, our "energizer bunny", managed to find a man to dance with her. His name was "Connie", short for Constantine, who told us that he had just turned 93 years young. He danced the twist, and then led Delores through some fancy turns. Way to go, Connie!

Kudos to our "Ambassadors of Love" for another high energy show. We all said a silent prayer before leaving, that we would not come down with the stomach flu. Luckily, in the days that followed, nobody did.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Our "Ambassadors of Love" were out in full regalia on March 5th to celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of the Regency at Dover. Last year, the ladies of the New Jersey Cameo Club entertained, for the grand opening of the senior clubhouse which is located on Route 37 in the Orchard Square Shopping Center, in Toms River. They also participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The theme of this year's party, was "Hollywood", and the staff and patrons were dressed up in gowns and tuxedos. Tasty h'ordoeuvres were passed around, followed by a sumptuous luncheon meal.

Everyone enjoyed the Cameo Showcase performance that followed. The audience were encouraged to sing along with the performers. Some did, while others kept time by clapping. A reporter and photographer from the Asbury Park Press were on hand to cover the event.

After the show, Betty, the Director of Activities, showed a slideshow, which included the activities and events from the first year. Coffee and dessert followed.

We at New Jersey Senior America and the New Jersey Cameo Club congratulate the staff of The Regency for the wonderful loving care and attention that you give seniors who suffer from alzheimers disease. We look forward to working together with you for many years to come.

FEBRUARY HAPPENINGS

The lovely ladies of the NEW JERSEY CAMEO CLUB were out spreading their special brand of good cheer last month. On February 20th, defying the harshness of "mother nature", colds and sniffles, our "Ambassadors of Love" entertained the good folks at the Rennaissance Gardens at Seabrook, an assisted care facility located in Tinton Falls. There was a lot of participation in this show, as the residents joined in clapping, and humming along with the singers. One gentlemen was especially memorable. When Delores Puzio looked for a dance partner, he came forward, and they did a lively jitterbug together.

The next NJCC Showcase was for the annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner at the Moose Lodge, in Beach Haven, on February 28th. The evening was a double bill, in which Sherri McGhie and her Mom, Norma shared the stage with the ladies of the NJCC. Sherri sang a variety of songs which included popular, broadway, R&B, and country. Her rich and mellow voice was enjoyed by all. Norma was so funny in her hilarious imitation of famed film star, Mae West.

The NJ CAMEO ladies dazzled the audience with songs, dance, and an impersonation. Dale Maglia, and her lusty country songs always excite the male fringe. The highlight of the show came in the finale, in which Cathy Clark and Doris Criscione teamed together, and sang "Sisters". Dressed as twins, their duet was funny and entertaining.

Kudos to Cathy and Doris for booking the events.

JANUARY - 2009 EVENTS

The New Year ushered in a cold and blustery month of January. However, that didn't deter the ladies of New Jersey Cameo Club from bringing "good cheer" where it was needed. Our "Ambassadors of Love" gave 2 Cameo Club Showcases last month. The first event, was January 19th, at Leisure Village West in Manchester, for the Italian -American Club. Cathy Clark was a most eloquent mistress of ceremonies, and the audience was dazzled by one stellar performance after another. The refreshments served afterwards weren't bad either!

Next, the annual pot luck luncheon, was held at Shorrock Gardens Assisted Care facility in Brick on January 29th. It is a time when members prepare their favorite dishes and share the recipes with each other. There was such a variety of foods, and a good time was had by all.

Following the luncheon, was the NJCC first meeting for the year beginning 2009. NJ State Pageant Director, Johanne Santori, announced the dates for the 2009 pageants as: MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA STATE PAGEANT, June 3rd - 4th, and MS SENIOR AMERICA NATIONAL PAGEANT, week of October 4th through 10th, both to be held at Harrah's Resort and Casino in Atlantic City.

Josephine Araniti, Publicity Chairperson, gave a progress report on the status of the general brochure for NJSA. She printed out a rough prototype and gave copies for the perusal of the officers and Johanne Santori. They agreed with her concept and design, and the membership did likewise. Inclusion of photos to the trifold was discussed. Josephine and Johanne will work together to finalize the plans.

On Friday, January 30th, NJCC performed for the fine folks at the Atria Assisted Living facility in Tinton Falls. JoAnn Gordon's PA system was used for the first time. She wasn't there, so, the ladies used the "trial-and-error" method to make the sound system work. The residents were so patient and tolerated their inexperience. Kudos to those wonderful people for loving us, despite our faults. At the end of the show, they gave the ladies hugs and handshakes, thanked them for coming, and even extended warm invitations to come back again.

"OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE WAS FRIGHTFUL"......

"Oh, the weather outside was frightful, but the party inside was so delightful!" The lyrics of this popular holiday song describe the terrible rain that could have ruined the New Jersey Cameo Club Christmas party. The last gala event of the 2008 season was held on Thursday, December 11th. The heavy downpour and high winds did not keep the members and invited guests away, nor did it dampen anyone spirits. Over 100 people came, making this the best attended party ever. All the ladies were dressed so beautifully, in gowns of every style, with red and green as the dominant color. Husbands, escorts, and significant others scored equally as well, looking very handsome in their tuxedos and dark suits.

The event was held at the elegant Lobster Shanty in Toms River, in the main banquet room. Festive outdoor lights glowed brightly onto the terrace, making the Toms River visible at night. The food was excellent, the wait staff was courteous, and a mimosa fountain "flowed" all night long.

Everyone danced the night away to live music performed by Steve Berger and his wife Debbie. People bought tickets for the chance to win many door prizes that were donated by area merchants. Kudos to NJCC president Delores Puzio and her committee for a job well done!

2008 - IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR!

It's that time again, when people say goodbye to the old year and ring in the new. For the members of New Jersey Senior America, it was no different. The year 2008 was marked by growth transition and change. It was a time to say goodbye and thank you to outgoing State Director Louise Ferla, and to welcome Johanne Santori to the position. Together with the help of Pinky Kravitz, affectionately known as "Mr. Atlantic City", they found a new home for the 2008 State Pageant at Harrah's Hotel and Casino.

The national pageant also needed to relocate from Las Vegas, so Johanne and Pinky persuaded the management of Harrah's to hold it there as well.

Johanne enlisted a force of devoted volunteers, and together, they worked tirelessly to produce a magnificent 2008 New Jersey Senior America Pageant.

The New Jersey Cameo Club, which is the service wing of New Jersey Senior America, also had a record year of performance showcases around the the Garden State. The Class of 2008 produced more ladies than ever who gave so unselfishly of their time and talents. Much of the credit is due to Marge Wanamaker, Showcase Director. She too, has decided to retire, not from performing, but from the position. Thank you, Marge, for a job well done! Doris Criscione and Cathy Clark, will co-chair the position, and are currently busy setting up the 2009 schedule.

Several people received proclamations from City and State this year. In September, Jo Ann Gordon, NJSA 2008, was honored by Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis and the Brick Town Council. In October, the New Jersey State Legislature sent written proclamations to Jo Ann Gordon, NJSA 2008, Josephine Araniti, NJSA 2007, Johanne Santori, NJ State Pageant Director, and Dr. Al Mott, founder New Jersey Senior America, and Senior America, Inc.

The last event of the year was the Christmas Parade in Atlantic City. The Saturday following Thanksgiving was a crystal clear and sunny day, with temperatures around 50 degrees. Atlantic Avenue was lined up with people of all ages and as the parade turned into the shopping outlets the crowd of shoppers cheered us to the end. Our float was headed by 2008 Queen Jo Ann Gordon and her court.

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: DR. SANDRA GRECO, M.D.

In the years that followed, many elegant and talented New Jersey Senior America Queens competed for the coveted national title, but no one won. Our founder, Dr. Al Mott explained that during those years, the growth and popularity of the Senior America Pageant was tremendous throughout the country and US territories. Each year, hundreds of beautiful and talented women aged 60 and over came out to compete, and the coveted title went to many other States.

Then, in 2003 the tide changed. When beautiful and talented Dr. Sandra Greco, M.D won the State Pageant, everyone connected with New Jersey Senior America hoped and that she would be the one to bring the title back to the Garden State. And she did!

Sandra was crowned the 23rd Ms Senior America at the Golden Phoenix Hotel Casino in Reno, Nevada on November 8, 2003. Dr. Greco sang "Misty" during the talent portion of the show.

Sandra, the eldest of three sisters, was born in Chicago. She attended the University of Illinois on a full scholarship and graduated cum laude. Sandra worked in advertising and modeling, and as a social worker and school teacher.

In 1976, Sandra decided to attend medical school, and completed an accelerated course, receiving her M.D. in 1979, where she earned honors in surgery, medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, and radiology. She completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago, and worked in the emergency department of an Evanston Illinois hospital. In 1984, she moved to New Jersey, and took a position as director of emergency department at a Newark New Jersey hospital where she worked for 16 years. After her retirement, Dr. Greco continued to work part-time at an emergency department in Red Bank, NJ.

Sandra has two married children, and two grandchildren, and is remarried to Danny Drucker. She has been spokesperson for Holiday Retirement Company, and continues to perform and travel with the Cameo Club of New Jersey. Sandra enjoys travel, biking, physical fitness, as well as the theater and the opera. She and Danny have a secondary home in Florida, where they live several months of the year there. She serves currently as the vice-president of the National Cameo Club.

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: JAN DICKSENSON

In the photo above, Jan Dickenson on the left, has just been crowned Ms New Jersey Senior America 1986, by former State and National Queen, Laverne Stokes. No photo of her as Ms Senior America 1987 is available.

In the following year, the national crown and title went to yet another "lady of elegance" who hailed from the Garden State. Lovely Jan Dickenson, lived in Leisuretown, an adult community located in Southampton. A talented vocalist, she sang the popular song, "Young at Heart". The event was again held in Atlantic City at Resorts.

Many years have passed at this writing, and not much is known is known about Jan through this reporter. Laverne Stokes however, remembered Jan as a sweet and humble lady, who gave a strong vocal performance at the 1986 State Pageant. She recalled that Jan served as Ms New Jersey Senior America 1986, and then, as Ms. Senior America 1987 with grace and charm. She remained an active performer with the New Jersey Cameo Club for many years.

After the death of her husband, Jan suffered a stroke, and had to move to Florida where she lived with her daughter.

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: LAVERNE STOKES

Three ladies from the State of New Jersey hold the national title of MS SENIOR AMERICA. Recently, this reporter had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Laverne Stokes, MS SENIOR AMERICA 1985, and the following is her story in question and answer format:

Q. How did you hear about Senior America?
A. In 1983, I joined an exercise group at the Dover Senior Center in Toms River. The director told me about SA and suggested that I enter the pageant. At that time, there was a local and a State pageant to compete in, and you had to win them both before competing in the national.

Q. How many titles do you hold then?
A. 3. I hold the title of: MS SR OCEAN COUNTY 1983, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 1984, and MS SENIOR AMERICA 1985.

Q. That's very impressive. What was your talent?
A. Tap dancing then, and still is today.

Q. Where were those early pageants held?
A. The MS SENIOR OCEAN COUNTY pageant was held at Ocean County College, and the state and national pageants were held at Resorts in Atlantic City.

Q. How do you think the SA pageants of today differ from your time?
A. In 1985, besides winning a crown, banner, trophy, and flowers, I also was given a long, red velvet cape. Today, the red velvet cape has been eliminated. Also, the ladies who compete today seem more professional in the talent category, younger, and more attractive.

Q. What was special about your reign?
A. A reporter from the Associated Press interviewed me, and published my story in major newspapers nationwide. One day, I received a phone call from Mrs. Barnard who lived in Georgia. She and her husband read about me, and were very impressed over my accomplishment. They invited me and my husband to visit them in Savannah for a week long, all expenses paid vacation. When we arrived at the Shawnee Inn Hotel, my name and title were lit up in the hotel's marquee. My room was adorned with flowers, candy, fresh fruit, confections and champagne.
During the week, the Barnards took us on a tour of the southern plantations, doll factory, Jekyll and Catalina Islands, and to meet the mayor of Savannah. They were a kind and generous couple and I will never forget them. There was no Cameo Club then, but I received invitations from Toms River politicians to perform and speak on issues of interest to senior citizens. Of course, I enjoyed participating in the many parades. Lastly, I had the pleasure of crowning Jan Dickenson, MS NJSA 1986, who went on to winning the title of MS SENIOR AMERICA 1987!

Q. Today NJSA does have a Cameo Club. How do you feel about the "sisterhood"?
A. It's a great way for me to continue to make a contribution to society. The Cameo Showcases allow me to continue to share my God-given talents, and to be socially active.

Q. What did you think about this year's 2008 SA pageant?
A. It was wonderful...so professionally done. I am so excited and proud of our own Jo Ann Gordon who made the top 10. I thought the new queen, from Tennessee was very beautiful, and her talent presentation, "A Church Rap" was funny and entertaining.

THE TOP TEN

Every pageant has a coveted "inner circle" that contestants vie for, which is called the top ten, and Ms New Jersey Senior America 2008, Jo Ann Gordon of Brick, made it. After many years in Las Vegas, the 28th Ms Senior America Pageant returned to the east coast, and was held at Harrah's in Atlantic City. The week long event offered many activities opened to the public which included: a parade on the boardwalk, live shows, a health expo, opportunities for shopping, and the Ms Senior America 2008 Pageant. Elegant and beautiful ladies from across the fruited plain and US territories graced the stage of the Concert Venue Theater, all hoping to win the crown, or if not, at least to be in the top ten.

Wearing a demeure and beautiful pale pink gown, Jo Ann excelled in physical beauty and poise. She appeared radiant, as she glided effortlessy across the stage in the Evening Gown catagory. Returning again to recite her Philosophy of Life, Jo Ann used sign language as she spoke. Lasting only 35 seconds, her philosphy was uplifting and optimistic, and relevant to today's issues. Her vocal rendition of "An Orange Colored Sky", was bright and powerful, and shouts of bravo and loud applause were heard throughout the theater.

New Jersey Senior America and her New Jersey Cameo Club were proud of JoAnn and how excellently she represented the Garden State at the national pageant. She will continue to reign as Ms New Jersey Senior America 2008, appear in Cameo Club Showcases along with the "sisterhood", and fullfill the many other duties assigned to her during the coming year.

GOOD LUCK! JO ANN GORDON, MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA2008

Since she was crowned Ms New Jersey Senior America 2008, Jo Ann Gordon has been one busy queen. In the first photo she is laughing at Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis of Brick, as he told a joke. Afterward, he read a proclamation of appreciation to Jo Ann on behalf of his Office and the Brick Town Council. Next, she and NJ State Pageant Director Johanne Santori stand in between the "Beatles", in the lobby of the Tropicana. She and Johanne were guests of radio show host Pinky Kravitz, which airs in the Atlantic City area. Below, Jo Ann smiles broadly as does host Mike Moran of WJRZ-FM Sunday morning show, "Down the Shore". Lovely Jo Ann at home standing in front of her piano. Lastly, Jo Ann, carrying a delicious culinary delight prepared by the head chef at "A Taste of Atlantic City".

Besides, these events, she has been in several parades around the State, and continues to sing with the New Jersey Cameo Club Showcases. Next week, she will compete with other State queens for the coveted title of Ms Senior America 2008, at Harrah's in Atlantic City. All of her NJ Cameo Club "sisters" are excited and proud of their queen and wish her the best. In their eyes, she is already a winner.

Pageant week is full of many exciting activites, and the public is cordially invited to attend any and all events beginning Sunday, October 19th through Friday, 24th. Of special interest is the parade on the boardwalk, which starts at 3:00pm. All the State delegates will ride in cars, and there will be music, floats and marching bands. On Monday, the National Cameo Club Showcase will be held in the Eden Lounge. On Tuesday, is the "Welcome to Atlantic City Show" in the Concert Venue Theater. The 2 preliminary pageants are on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Final Competition, on Friday, also in the theater. With the exception of the parade, all shows begin at 1:00 pm. THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: MS. DELAWARE SENIOR AMERICA 2008

"Many seek, but few are chosen". This is the story of Delores Puzio, who was chosen to represent the State of Delaware in the upcoming Ms. Senior America 2008 Pageant. In an effort to have all 50 States and US territories represented in the annual pageants, Senior America, Inc. chooses only worthy and exceptional women to the position of At-Large State Delegate. This year, Dr. Al Mott bestowed that honor upon Delores in appreciation of her 10 year association with New Jersey Senior America. In his opinion, there was no finer lady who could represent the State of Delaware better than she.

Delores joins 45 other beautiful women from around the country, who will compete for the national title of Ms Senior America 2008. Many events are planned for the week of Sunday, October 19th through Friday, 24th at Harrah's in Atlantic City, which include: a Sunday Parade on the Boardwalk at 3:00pm, "Welcome To Atlantic City" show, Senior Health Expo with many opportunities for shopping, 2 Preliminary Shows, and the Final Competition. Delores presently serves as President of the New Jersey Senior America Cameo Club, in which she manages and oversees its many meetings, activities and events during the year. She performs with NJSACC, and continually manages to impress her audiences with great jazz tap dance routines. Her Cameo Club sisters lovingly nicknamed her the "energizer bunny". She is also involved in her church in Toms River, as teacher in the religious education program.

A professionally trained dancer, Delores had her own studio for many years. During that time, she trained many aspiring dancers and encouraged them to realize their dreams. Her advice to them was, "work with what you've got, and never be envious of others".

Delores believes that her most important accomplishment was raising their 4 children, and that she and husband Bob of 58 years were the epitome of soulmates. Even though Bob succumbed to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, she made sure to let him know that he was never a burden.

NJSA, NJSA Cameo Club, and Senior America, Inc. are grateful to Delores for adopting the neighboring State of Delaware, and all wish her well in next week's Ms Senior America Pageant 2008. She is the ideal woman to "light the torch of awareness" in Delaware, which will hopefully lead to future pageants by the residents of that State. MEET MARGE WANAMAKER

Organizations owe their success to the dedicated people who work for them, and New Jersey Senior America Cameo Club is no exception. Margaret "Marge" Wanamaker, an exceptional women of beauty and grace, is one such dedicated person. As the New Jersey Cameo Club Showcase Director, she is the lady who gives its members the opportunity to display their God-given talents.

Over the years Marge has worked hard to promote the Cameo Showcase productions. Today, thanks to her hard work, the Cameo Club is constantly in demand to perform all over the Garden State. Most recently, she arranged a Cameo Club performance for the veterans at the Lyons, New Jersey campus. A large audience of veterans from all branches of the military and their families were in attendance, and a good time was had by all.

Marge is also a very talented performer. As our resident "Marilyn Monroe", she does such an impeccable imitation, that audiences are amazed by the uncanny resemblance she has to the late movie star.

She is a life affirming and positive women, who rewards her ladies with encouragement and praise whenever they perform. All who know her adore her. Kudos to you, Marge Wanamaker, for a job well done!

Since the New Jersey Senior America Cameo Club was founded by Dr. Al Mott, it remains today the first and oldest club in Senior America, Inc. Consequently its mission, purpose and goals are the same.
The NJSA Cameo Club boasts to having the oldest member, who, at age 94, still gives a stellar performance every time she appears in the Cameo Showcases.

The NJSA Cameo Club is designed to be a continuing contact between the pageant and former contestants, and State and national queens, and helps by assisting the State Pageant Director as much as possible. Its members give emotional and financial support to their State queen during the year of her reign.

Recently, one of our most valued and beloved members wrote a poem, that was published in the New Jersey Senior America 2008 Pageant booklet. Norma McGhie, Ms. New Jersey Senior America 1995, sums up most poignantly the purpose of NJSA Cameo Club and its national affiliates:

The Cameo Club

Kindness, love, respect and caring
Is what the Cameo Club is all about.
We're a sisterhood that believes in sharing
Our talent, our ideas, our wisdom, our clout.

To support Senior America in every way
To support each other in everything we do.
To cope with problems that may come our way
In doing so, goals will be achieved and dreams come true.

To have a positive attitude in our sisterhood
Spreading good will, motivating and doing good.
We're at an age when certain things are important to us
A fond embrace, a kind word, a sincere feeling of trust.

To be elegant in more ways than one.
To work together to get the job done.
To be what Sr. America wants us to be
And live up to their philosophy.

To improve our image and that of others too

"The Age of Elegance"

Pictured above is the Senior America Cameo Club logo. The story of how it came to be is as follows: in his youth, Al Mott's singing teacher had a display of cameos in her studio. Years later, he remembered how elegant they looked. So, he chose the cameo for the logo, and then coined the phrase, "The Age of Elegance" to describe women 60 years and older.

Dr. Al Mott believed that women who participated in the State and National Senior America Pageants should have the opportunity to continue to display their God given talents, and, at the same time volunteer their talents for the betterment of society. So, in 1972, along with the first Pageant, he established the Senior America National Cameo Club.

Today, there are State Cameo Clubs wherever there are State pageants, and mature women showcase their performing talents, in nursing homes, adult and assisted living communities, veterans and childrens hospitals, and other community and charitable organizations. These smiling "Ambassadors of Love" don their crowns and banners, and give stellar performances wherever they go, thus enriching the lives of their recipients, and improving their quality of life as well.

DR. AL MOTT, THE FOUNDER

The dictionary defines a "visionary" as a person with unusual powers of foresight. It is easy to see how Dr. Al Mott falls into this category. During the 1960's Al saw how bleakly older Americans, were percieved by the media as being fragile, non productive and a burden upon society. He set out to change that image, and in 1971, created Senior America, Inc., to promote instead, the positive aspects of aging.

Dr. Mott's goal for the first Senior America Pageant in 1972, was to create a public awareness of the continuing social contributions of senior Americans, and by 1983, his idea spread to States from coast to coast.

Each year since then, women across the country, who have reached the "Age of Elegance", compete first in their State for the title, and then go on to nationals to see who will be Ms. Senior America. Dr. Mott calls the Pageant a "rite" of passage, in which women can achieve their individual dreams and aspirations. Over the years, he has witnessed how the Pageant has changed the lives of many people, and how America's seniors have moved ahead to become our greatest national treasure.

Dr. Al Mott joins the ranks of other visionaries who have broken still another "glass ceiling", which has resulted in closing the gap between generations, AARP, Elder Advocate, Silver Foxes, to name a few.

His quest continues.... Dr. Mott has gone global, by creating Senior International. He has reached out to countries worldwide, encouraging them to honor their senior women by having Pageants. Ms Senior America would then compete for the title of Ms Senior International.

The popular English composer Elton John wrote a song called "The Circle of Life". The meaning of the song suggests that life is like a circle, whose continuity is preserved and replenished by the outgoing constantly preparing the way for the incoming. Thus the continuity of the Ms New Jersey Senior America Pageant has been preserved, with the appointment of Johanne Santori. This is Johanne's first year as Ms New Jersey Senior America State Pageant Director, who succeeds Louise Ferla, who after 13 years, had decided to retire.

Johanne, who is no stranger to the pageant industry, served as hostess for the Miss America Pageant for many years. During that time, she met several industry professionals, whose friendship she maintains to the present day. It was these ladies who guided her in the planning of the 2008 Ms New Jersey Senior America Pageant that was held on June 25th.

As well as being Ms New Jersey Senior America 2006, Johanne has been vice president and treasurer of the Atlantic City Women's Chamber of Commerce, member of the Metropolitan Business and Citizen's Association of Atlantic City, the Atlantic City Hotel Lodging Association, and on the committee for Atlantic City's 150th Birthday Celebration.

She devotes much of her time to her family, but still has time to play tennis, golf, down hill and cross country skiing, and she has won tournaments and awards in all.

Johanne was born, raised and educated in the Province of Quebec, Canada, and is a graduate of the University of Montreal with degrees in teaching Home Economics and Music. A talented singer, she performed major roles with a regional theater group, and also gave organ and piano recitals. As member of the Ms New Jersey Senior America Cameo Club, she continues to sing with the "sisterhood" all around the Garden State.

Senior America, Inc. needed to find a new home for the national and State pageants, and Johanne was instrumental in securing Harrah's in Atlantic City for both. Johanne ushered in a new era of management in which she organized people with various skills into committees, and trusted them to carry out their tasks. The end result was an original, elegant and glamorous Ms New Jersey Senior America Pageant 2008 that was enjoyed by all.

A FOND FAREWELL

Louise Ferla, won the title of Ms New Jersey Senior America in 1993. Three years later, she was appointed New Jersey Senior America Executive Director, and Vice President of Ms Senior America, Inc. Here she is with husband Bob.

One of the highlights of the Ms New Jersey Senior America Pageant 2008 was when Louise Ferla came onto the stage at Harrah's in Atlantic City, to give her farewell address. A woman of grace and poise, her speech was eloquent as it was sentimental. It was a retrospective narrative, and one couldn't help but to be impressed by her humility and dedication to this organization that she served so well for 13 years.

Due to health concerns, she decided that it was best to retire at this time, and wished Johanne Santori, the new State Director much love and success. Louise will, however continue to work with the national organization, Senior America, Inc.

All of us who know Louise, can rest assured that she will never be far away to lend a helping hand. She will continue to perform with her Cameo Club Sisters in Showcases throughout the Garden State. We will always cherish her friendship and great talent!

The Queen reigns, long live the Queen! A capacity crowd filled the Concert Venue Theater at Harrah's in Atlantic City, on Wednesday, June 25th, where 14 fabulous ladies graced the stage to compete for the coveted title of MS NEW JERSEY SENIOR AMERICA 2008, and lovely Jo Ann Gordon won. A retired public school teacher of 38 years, Jo Ann taught in the Neptune Township School System where she learned sign language in order to participate in the hearing impairment and special education programs.
A big band style singer, she has sung backup for Paul Anka, toured Europe, and has recorded CDs. For her talent, she sang an arrangement of a Nat King Cole standard, "Orange Colored Sky" that rocked the house!

National finals to determine who will be MS SENIOR AMERICA 2008 will also take place at Harrah's during the week of October 19-25, and Jo Ann will represent the Garden State. Jo Ann says she is looking forward to meeting other talented delegates from around the country. She believes that women over 60 who live in the "age of elegance"can make a big difference in people's lives both younger and older than themselves. Good luck, girl. Your New Jersey Cameo Club sisters are very proud of you!

The cameo pictured here is the logo for both State and national organizations, as well as our philosophy which reads: The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the world's first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the "Age of Elegance". It is a search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity, and inner beauty of all senior Americans.

The Ms, Senior America Pageant philosophy is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society.
